Crow:I had a good time, but I think I pissed you off.
Angie:I’m not mad. I just have a lot going on.
Crow:If that’s the story you’re gonna stick to, okay.
Several minutes slipped by before she replied.
Angie:It’s not a story—it’s the truth.
Knowing if he argued the point, she’d probably retreat behind the wall already built around her feelings, so he sucked in a deep breath and slowly exhaled.
Crow:I know your caseload is fuckin’ insane. How about meeting up for a drink this weekend?
Angie:Sounds fun, but I have too much family stuff going on.
Crow:Okay.
No matter how much he wanted to spend more time with her, he wasn’t the type to cajole a woman into going out with him.
Angie:Maybe I can slip away after dinner Saturday night?
A grin spread across his mouth.
Crow:Saturday’s good.
Angie:It’ll have to be after 9. Where do you want to meet?
“No way, darlin’,” he mumbled.
Crow:I’ll pick you up. I’m not budging on that, so don’t argue.
Another lag in response.
Angie:You’re pretty bossy, aren’t you?
Crow:Only when I need to be. How’ve you been?
Angie:Okay. You?
Crow:The same. Okay.
Angie:I have to go. So, Saturday, right?
Crow:Yeah. Text me your address.
Angie:I will. Gotta run. Bye.
Crow:Later.
Slipping the phone into his cut, he let out a long breath. A frisson of irritation niggled at him, but he pushed it away, refusing to let it take hold. For the last several days, Crow’s annoyance had been a constant companion as Angie continued to ignore him. And now? He was downright happy—even excited—to have heard from her.Damn pussy. If Eagle, Scorpio, or any of the brothers wore a smile as wide as his after hearing from a chick, they’d get ribbed mercilessly.
Crow shook his head. What is it about this woman? The strong pull he felt to her went more profound than just attraction; he wanted to spend time getting to know her. It had been years since he’d felt that way about a woman, not since his ex-wife. After Lauren’s betrayal, he never thought he’d feel anything but lust for a woman. Here he was, standing on the patio, looking up at the twinkling stars, happy as shit that he had a date with Angie on Saturday.
“Need some company?”
The strong jasmine scent of Ruby’s perfume curled around him. He glanced over at her and smiled.
“Nah, I’m good.”
