“Yeah . . . I should go.”
Angie slid into the car, and after Crow closed her door, he flashed her a wickedly sexy grin that made her heart skip a beat. Switching on the ignition, she waved at him and pulled away from the curb.
“That guy’s got a real attitude,” Joey said as he looked down at his phone.
Glancing in the rearview mirror, she saw him still standing there, watching her. She smiled to herself, thinking about how safe she felt in his arms.
“Did you hear me?”
“I’m sorry. Were you talking to me?”
“Yes, I said that guy’s got an attitude.”
She laughed. “He does, but I think that’s sort of a thing with a lot of bikers.”
Joey put his phone down. “He’s a biker?”
“Yes, he’s in the Night Rebels club. He has a Harley, a leather jacket—the whole nine yards.”
“Are you fucking around with me?”
“No, I’m not. What’s up with you?”
Joey settled back against the seat and stretched his legs. “Let’s just say that I’m glad I didn’t tell him what I was thinking back in Abe’s apartment.”
She laughed. “I’m glad you didn’t either. I don’t think he takes any shit from people.”
“No kidding.” He reached over and increased the volume on the radio. “I love this song.”
As they headed back to the office, embarrassment over the way she threw herself at him in the stairwell consumed her. Of course, she was crazy with fear when she’d done it, but he most definitely had the wrong impression about her now.He probably thinks I want to jump in bed with him.The memory of her body pressed tight against his hard chest filled her mind.
Stop. Enough. Remember how he was chatting up Ginny, and he was probably there because he was with Valerie. And he was with another woman the night at Flanigan’s.
“What a jerk!” Angie pounded her fist against the steering wheel.
“What happened?” Joey asked, looking at the car next to hers.
“I was just thinking about something.” She giggled. “Sorry.”
“I wouldn’t want to be the guy who’s on your mind,” he said with a laugh, then went back to listening to the radio.
Next time she went back to Madera Crossing, she’d have to make sure not to run into Crow. The farther she stayed away from him, the better.
Angie couldn’t risk losing her heart to a womanizer.
Not again.
