“Okay.” She winked at Eagle. “I’ll be back with yours.” She turned to Angela’s table. “Can I get you anything to drink?”

“How the fuck do you know her?” Eagle asked in a low voice.

Crow didn’tknowAngela, but his friend didn’t need to learn the particulars. “She works for HUD.”

As if that explained everything, Eagle shook his head. “Lucky fucker.” He looked over at the table again, then back at Crow. “Her friend’s cute.”

“You’re meeting Cueball for a sure thing, so I’d leave this alone.”

“Is that the guy?” Crow overheard Angela’s friend asking her.

Satisfaction wove through him.So she told her friend about me. I knew she was interested.

“Silvia,” she said in a raised whisper.

From the corner of his eye, he saw her friend clap a hand over her mouth.

“Sorry,” Silvia said in a muffled voice.

“Here you go.” Tammy placed a large slice of pie in front of Eagle. “Do you want a cup of coffee with that?”

Eagle picked up his fork. “Sure.”

Glancing at Crow, she smiled. “I’ll freshen up yours.” She filled his mug before placing one in front of Eagle.

“What’s good here?” Silvia asked, looking over at Crow.

“You’ve never been here either?” Eagle asked.

A smile danced across her lips. “Not for a long time. I used to come here with my high school friends.”

“Are you from here?” Eagle picked up his mug and took a sip.

“Born and raised. What about you?”

“Yep.”

Silvia glanced over at Crow. “And you?”

“No.”

“Where are you from?”

As her friend asked questions, Crow noticed Angela stealing furtive, sidelong glances at him.

“Arizona.”

“I almost went to Arizona once,” Silvia said.

The woman’s questions and attempts at conversation were getting on his nerves. “Good for you.”

Silvia’s face crumpled at the same time Angela’s eyes snapped to his and narrowed. “That’s rude,” she said.

“So is asking a bunch of questions.”

“I was just being friendly,” Silvia said.

“We’re not exactly the friendly type,” Eagle said, glancing up from his phone.
