Contreras lifted his chin and glanced back down at the file on his desk. After a few minutes, he swiveled his seat to face the window overlooking the parking lot. He watched his partner back out his Toyota Camry from the space. Since the divorce, Onofrio had to trade in his Toyota 4Runner for that one. The detective chuckled. He hates that car with a passion.

He shifted his gaze on the rugged San Juan Mountains. Vibrant wildflowers dotted the slopes with color, and the white bark of the aspen trees stood in stark contrast to the dense forest of green pines.

The detective turned back to the file and sifted through the crime scene photos to ensure he hadn’t missed anything. At this stage of the investigation, everyclue was priceless.
