“Horribly killed. I found him. Crow knew him. I can’t believe it …” Her voice trailed away as tears spilled down her cheeks. “I’m sorry,” she whispered.

“Who was killed?” Eagle asked.

“One of the residents. Abe Dwyer. I couldn’t—”

“Abe? Fuck!” Eagle yelled.

The bikers then broke out into angry conversation, their voices low for the most part, except for the occasional “Fuck that!”

“Call Crow,” Scorpio said, but Eagle already had a cell phone to his ear.

“He’d want to know,” she said.

Scorpio turned away from Angie as did the other men. Suddenly, she felt like an intruder in their private world and turned around to head toward her car.

“Hi, Angie.”

She glanced up. “Hi.”

“Benny, remember? I’m Crow’s friend.” The dark-haired man shoved his hands in the pockets of his black jeans.

“I remember.” She looked over at Josh. “Hi.”

“Hey,” he said, shuffling his feet on the pavement.

“What are you guys doing here?” she asked.

“We’re helping them”—Benny tipped his head in the direction of the group of bikers—“move Valerie and her kids out.”

“I’m glad to hear Crow found them a better place to live. I’m surprised he’s not here to orchestrate all this.”

“Something came up—he had to go to Durango,” Benny said.

“I hope it’s nothing serious,” she said.

“Just some shit with Diana,” Josh mumbled.

“His sister, right?”

Josh fixed his gaze on her. “Yeah, but he knows a lot of women there too.”

The words were like a sucker punch to her gut. She clenched the strap of her purse and stumbled back a few steps. Why did Josh tell me that? Does he feel sorry for me, or think I’m being duped by Crow?

“Stu,” Josh said as he walked past her.

There was a long moment of awkwardness, then Benny cleared his throat.

“Crow went to help out his sister. Josh is talking BS.”

Avoiding his gaze, she said, “I didn’t ask for an explanation, did I?” The words came out harsher than she’d intended.

“No, but I thought I should give one in case you got the wrong impression.”

“Thanks, I guess.”

“What’s going on here?” Stu asked.

Benny looked over at the front of the building. Several sheriff’s deputies and two men in suits walked through the opened doors. He glanced over at Angie.
