“Get the fuck out!”

“What the fuck’s going on?” the voice boomed.

“This bitch is accusing me of shit,” she whined.

“Who are you talking about?”

Then the door opened wide andthere he was: the hot, well-built guy who’d been on Angie’s mind way too much for the last several days.I can’t believe it’s him.Again. What’s up with that?

“It’s you,” he said, the gruffness in his voice softening.

“Yeah,” she muttered. Can I sound any dumber?

“What’re you doing here?” he asked, a tiny smile dancing across his lips—his full, sensual lips.

She looked down the hall, then back at him. “I’m here to ask”—she pointed at the woman standing next to him—“Ms. Stockton a few questions.”

“’Bout what?”

“Do you live here?” Angie asked him.

Shaking her head, Ms. Stockton yelled, “I already told you who lives here!”

Crow—she had asked Aunt Rosa his name after he’d left the deli that night—looked genuinely surprised at the woman’s outburst.

“Chill, Valerie,” he said.

“She’s accusing me of lying.”

Angie cleared her throat. “I’m just trying to do my job.”

“And what’s your job?” he asked.

“I work for HUD.”

“She’s a fucking narc,” Valerie spewed.

Crow’s eyes swept over Angie, and a slight shiver ran through her. This is ridiculous. She pulled out her iPad and looked down.

“I’m an investigator with HUD. We believe that Ms. Stockton”—she looked up and met Crow’s dark gaze—“has an adult male living in the household.” After pausing a long second for effect, she asked, “Are you living here?”

“Nope,” he said.

Angie wanted to ask him why he was there but resisted. She was a professional and there to do a job. The fact that this woman was not the one he was with at the restaurant didn’t go unnoticed by her. He’s a player. I knew that from the first time I saw him.

“I have to take care of my daughter,” Valerie said.

“Okay, so you’re still telling me that you don’t have any other adult living with you, correct?”

Valerie chewed on another fingernail. “That’s right.”

“Do you mind if I come in to look around?”

“I already told you that Ido.”

“Did someone say a dude’s living here?” Crow asked.

Angie snapped the iPad shut. “I’m the one asking questions, okay?”
