“I don’t believe that,” his mother gasped.
“Of course you don’t—Bret’s the fuckin’ golden boy.”
“Chet, watch your language!”
“As far as Autumn goes, yeah, we’re together, and I don’t give a fuck if you, Dad, or anybody else approves ’cause I’m not asking permission. Bret beat the shit outta her—did he tell youthat one?”
“He’d never do something like that. Your father’s right—you’ve always been a troublemaker and very jealous of your brother.”
“Jealous of a pansy-ass? Nah. Disgusted? Yeah. Disdainful? Fuck yeah. Butneverjealous. So, is the loser at the house seeking protection from you and Dad?”
“Stop talking about your brother like that. What’s wrong with you? You abandoned your family to live with hoodlums, and now you’re flaunting the fact that you’re with that… that horrid woman who broke your brother’s heart? Why aren’t you normal?”
“If Dad, Bret, and the way you always take Dad’s side against me isnormal, then I’m fuckin’ thrilled not to benormal. You think what you want. I’m done.” He clicked off the phone and didn’t pick up when his mom called back.
Anger flashed through him, and Chains took several deep breaths to calm down before he went inside the clinic. Bret had been dodging him ever since he’d abused Autumn. He knew Bret was in town, but he hadn’t shown up at his place of work, his condo, none of his friends’ houses, or any of his usual haunts. Even upon questioning Teresa at her apartment, she’d claimed that she didn’t know where Bret was. Chains figured the asshole was working remotely, and now he was pretty sure he was at their parents’ house.
When Autumn had told him a few weeks ago that Bret had called and asked to get back together, Chains had scoured the town looking for him to no avail. A fierce stab of possessiveness had hit him, and it was at that moment he’d realized how much Autumn meant to him.
The phone’s ringtone sliced through his thoughts and he picked up his cell and shouted, “What?”
“Don’t chew my head off.” Autumn’s voice was warm and bright like a beam of sunshine.
The anger jabbing his gut dulled, and the corners of his mouth turned up. “Sorry, I didn’t look at the name before answering.”
“Oh. Who was it meant for?”
“No one, really. What’s up?”
“I was wondering how long you were planning to stay in the parking lot.” She let out a small laugh.
Chains looked at the front window and saw her peeking out of the Venetian blinds. “I’m coming in.”
“Come around back and I’ll let you in.” A tremor of excitement laced her voice.
Desire replaced anger as he quickly got out of the car. “I’m headed there now.” He slipped the phone into the pocket of his leather jacket and hurried across the lot.
When he rounded the corner of the building, he saw Autumn standing just outside the back door. She looked breathtakingly beautiful in a dark green lace top and a pencil skirt, which fit her to perfection, and complemented the dazzling copper highlights the afternoon sun had brought out in her hair. Blood rushed to his groin and his dick twitched.
Autumn’s spellbinding eyes danced in merriment as she watched him close the distance between them. As soon as the heady scent of her perfume engulfed Chains, he yanked her to him without thinking, then kissed her deeply.
“I missed you, babe,” he whispered.
“We were together last night,” she murmured.
“It feels like a fuckin’ lifetime.” Pulling away, he gripped her hand. “Come on.”
Once inside the building, she wiggled out of his grasp, and he followed her into the office. Thor immediately leapt up and rushed over to Chains; he petted the dog, then took out a bully stick from his pocket and gave it to him. The dog dashed over to the corner of the room and happily chewed on the bone.
“He likes that,” Autumn said.
“And I like these,” Chains whispered as he cupped her tits.
“I’m at work,” she said, glancing over his shoulder at the door.
“And why’s that a problem?” He nuzzled her neck, then licked and nipped the sensitive spot near her ear, knowing it drove her fucking wild.
“Chains,” she whispered, and then pushed away. “Let me lock the door.”
