“I’m not going back to that life,” I said. “I got a chance to start over here, and I’m taking it.”
“Nobody leaves the Serpents. If Hector finds out where you are, he’ll kill you.”
“I did my time, Puck. For you. All these years you’ve been rolling with the Serpents, I’ve been inprison. I earned this.”
He glanced toward the glass window, where the shop interior was visible, then took a few steps back, motioning me closer. Out of view of the other bikers.
He fisted a hand in my shirt and pulled me close. “You’ve gotta come back, Knight. He’ll kill you. You know he will. Hector is unhinged.”
“So don’t tell him,” I said.
“If he finds out, he’ll kill me, too.”
“Well, lucky for us both, you’re good at keeping secrets.”
Puck had to keep his sexuality a secret, or his own club would murder him. Keeping my location to himself was a small ask, really.
I pulled away. “I gotta get back inside. My boss is waiting.”
He glowered. “You better hope this doesn’t blow up in both our faces.”
“If it does, I won’t be saving you this time,” I said shortly. “I’m not a martyr for you to use anymore.”
CHAPTER 11
AIDEN
“Having fun with your research?”Dr. Foley asked as he entered the lab.
I tucked my butterscotch candy into my cheek so I could answer. The sugar was helping me focus.
“It’s a lot of data to mine through, but it’s interesting. I’m already seeing some patterns of myocardio?—”
“Cool. I’ve got to update the care plan for our bypass. So, good luck with that.”
Dr. Rose had let me observe the procedure earlier today, so I knew the patient’s name. “You mean, Frank Matthews?”
“Yeah, whatever.” He sat down at a terminal and typed in his login. “I just think of them by their surgeries. Easier to keep track.”
“How’s he doing?”
“Well, no one’s paged me. So, probably just fine.”
“They wouldn’t page Dr. Rose?”
“Nope. She went home. I’ll be going too, as soon as this plan is done, so how about you let me focus?”
I didn’t understand how he could be so impersonal withthe patients. He didn’t even think of them by name? I had already swung by the ICU to peek in on Frank and chatted up the nurses about how he was recovering. Meanwhile, Dr. Rose was gone and Dr. Foley seemed less than invested in anything but the paperwork he had to finish.
They were amazing in the OR, but they seemed to leave all their passion in the sterile environment.
I crunched into my candy, swallowing the sugary sweet shards, and closed down my computer for the evening. I’d stayed late to get enough research hours in after the surgery. It was a massive project to update data five years out of date, and I was afraid I’d let it get away from me if I didn’t stay on top of my hours.
It didn’t hurt that it kept me away from home a little longer and the growing tension with Knight.
It was after eight when I pulled into the driveway. The trailer glowed with lights in the living room and kitchen, so Knight was there.
Waiting in all his sexy glory.
