“He was really there?” I brushed my fingers over his jaw. “He hurt you?”

“Yeah. Him and two other guys.”

I gently turned his face toward me, anger flaring hot. “I know I’m a doctor, but I want to kill that asshole.”

His tight expression softened into a smile. “No, you don’t.”

“Oh, I really fucking do.”

He laughed a little. “Really? But you’re one of the good guys.”

“And so are you,” I said emphatically. “You deserve better, Knight. I mean, Will. Sorry. I slipped, but I’ll try to remember.”

“I like hearing you say my real name.”

“Will,” I repeated softly. “You deserve better.”

He looked almost sad as he reached out to cup my cheek. “I really want that to be true.”

“It is,” I insisted. “Listen to me. I’m a doctor.”

He snorted. “Do you think that argument works for everything?”

“Yes,” I said smugly. “Haven’t you ever heard of doctor’s orders?”

He laughed, eyes brightening with humor, just as I’d wanted. “Well, who am I to defy the doctor?”

“Exactly.” I rolled forward to brush a kiss against his cheek. “And right now, the doctor orders you to rest while I get a damp cloth and clean you up.”

“This is a full-service doctor’s appointment,” he murmured.

“It sure is.” I scooted out of the bed. “Don’t go anywhere.”

“Couldn’t move if I wanted to, Angel.”

I slipped into his bathroom and ran a washcloth underwarm water. When I returned to the darkened bedroom, Knight’s eyes were closed.

“Knight?” I said softly. “Will?”

He made a soft, inquiring noise in his sleep. My heart melted as I stared at him in the bed, so big and intimidating—yet soft and sweet—and knew that I was royally screwed.

This was supposed to be casual. I was still leaving at the end of the year. I couldn’t afford to get serious about anyone right now. My career would take me far away.

But right now, I only wanted to hold him and never let go.

CHAPTER 22

KNIGHT

“I gotta go,Angel. It’s almost four.”

Aiden locked his arms around my neck to keep me in bed. “Nooo. Your lip is finally healed enough for proper kissing. You should kiss me more.”

I sank into another lengthy kiss, unable to deny him, before breaking away. “Mm. I missed that too. Let’s pick this up when I get back.”

He pushed his lip out in a pout. “I’ve got to run some errands.”

“So do them while I’m gone. Then we can both crawl into bed for the rest of the evening.”
