“I thought…I mean, I assumed you wanted to keep things casual.” Time seemed to stop while she waited for his answer.
“Maybe at first.” He pulled her closer and brushed a light kiss across her lips, and her doubts started to slowly dissolve. “But not anymore.”
Her heart swelled with hope, but her rational brain still wasn’t convinced. “Why the sudden shift?”
His eyes shuttered for a second. “I got a wake-up call.”
She bit her lip. “I don’t understand.”
“I’ll tell you all about it later.” He yawned and kissed her again, this time longer and harder. “Right now, we could both use some sleep.”
“Here? she asked, her lips still buzzing from the desperate pressure of his mouth on hers. “What about Oliver? He’s across the hall.”
“I’ll set an alarm and be out before he wakes up.”
Mallory gave up the losing battle and snuggled into him, letting her head rest on his chest. “Okay.”
They hadn’t settled anything. She didn’t have a clue where their relationship was headed.
But her heart didn’t seem to care.
