That last bit wasn’t something I was used to doing with anyone, women included. Flirting, sure. But that wasn’t the same thing. Flirting could be a wall as much as it was a door.
Actually opening up to make space for someone close to me, to let them get close to me, was something else entirely. Something I’d never really known how to do.
Me:I’m not good at boundaries. Just tell me if I’m treading over the line.
I wondered if she was still awake as I waited for her response.
Angeline:Why aren’t you good at boundaries?
Me:Maybe I have a hard time sensing where yours are at.
Angeline:Why?
I finished my smoke, then finally responded.
Me:Because I’m so focused on keeping my own locked down tight.
Angeline:Well it goes both ways. You can tell me if I’m overstepping too.
Me:You’re always overstepping.
Another laughing emoji came at me.
I smiled. It occurred to me that we’d just covered more ground, personally, in this text conversation than we had in days. Or possibly ever.
Me:Maybe it’s easier if we test the boundaries here. Then you know I won’t try to kiss you again.
Yet.
Angeline:Okay…
Me:First rule. You have to be honest.
Angeline:Great. Rules again. You have too many of those you know.
Me:That’s the only rule. Also if you say something that might be misinterpreted and you want to make it clear we’re not arguing… punctuate it with an appropriate emoji.
Angeline:I thought guys hated emojis.
Me:You use so many superlatives and made up words I need to know if you’re being sarcastic or what. I have a hard enough time reading emotions in person.
Angeline:Okay. So you go first. Test my boundaries.
No emoji.
Was she kidding? Or flirting?
Did she mean that as sexually as I read it?
I considered carefully. She’d kissed me back tonight, but then she didn’t seem to want me to take her inside. But then she texted me to tell me it was a “nice kiss.”
And now she wanted me to test her boundaries.
From a safe distance.
I tried to think of something that might push the envelope but still keep that safe distance intact for her.
Me:I’ve seen you on my security cams.
