Katie sighed, but she didn’t argue with that.

My phone jingled with a couple of incoming texts. “I should go,” I told Katie. “I need to update my resume. It’s eleven years old.”

“Oh, Devi.”

“I’ll call you later.” I hung up and checked my texts.

Chaz:Maybe we have something for Frozen Thor? (Snowflake and fire emojis.)

Chaz:We should get him something.

I looked up, through my window. If I leaned hard left, I could see the door to Janelle’s (former) office, closed. I got up and went over to the window, so I could also see part of the reception desk. And Chaz leaning on it, pretending to talk to Suri—as he checked out Dane Davenport through the window.

God. Really? He wanted us to find modeling work for our new employer? Impossible. Camera lenses would seize up and shatter under that frigid gaze.

I texted Chaz a white-haired old man emoji. It was our shorthand, invented by Chaz himself, fortoo old to be here. Which meant pretty much anyone over seventeen, maybe nineteen, or an incredibly, jaw-droppingly gorgeous twenty-something—ifhe/she had the rare presence and brand potential to become an influencer large enough to make any bank worth our time.

Chaz:He’s HUGE tho.

I wasn’t sure if he was referring to the size of Dane Davenport’s apparent ego, his shoulder span, or whatever Chaz had sussed out in the front of his pants. But either way…

Me:Then tell him the porn studio’s up the street.

Chaz:?

Me:Don’t text me again unless it’s about anything other than that man.

Me:Or scones.

I tossed my phone on my desk and sat down to get to work. And to pray that Chaz didn’t go pitching Dane Davenport on how he should become a model.

As if his massive ego needed any more encouragement.

When I checked my email, I already had a few replies to the staff email I’d sent out. And a new email sitting at the top of my inbox… from my new employer.

Great. He was emailing me.That’s one step closer to an actual relationship.

I considered sending it to spam and pretending I’d somehow missed it if he asked…

But I clicked it open.

Ms. Sereda,

I’ll need you to send me a summary of your current job description/duties, as you see them, and do the same for each of the staff. Keep it brief. I’d like a quick snapshot of what each staff member is responsible for here.

This is a priority. Get this to me by the end of the day.

Dane Davenport

Wow. Even his emails were cold and douchy.

I sat back in my chair and read it again.

Did he just draw first blood?

Maybe.

Maybe not.
