“What you did wasserious,” I said.

“Yeah?” Shane leveled me with a look. “How about when you kissed Devi at grad? How serious was that?”

Oh, fuck.

He knew about that?

“She was my date,” he reminded me. “And yeah, she told me you kissed her.”

Shit.

“Look. Shane…”

“That was okay with you?” he pressed.

“No. It’s not okay.”

“Then why did you do it? What could make it okay for you to kiss your best friend’s grad date behind his back? I mean, hardly makes what your dad did that night seem so—”

“Alright,” Lex cut in. “That’s enough, Shane.”

“Don’t fucking bring my dad into this,” I bit out.

“I’m just saying.” Shane put the joint out with a flick of his fingers. “Devi was never justa girlto you. Why don’t you just admit that you wanted her? You wanted her then and you want her now.”

“And that’s why you asked her to grad? Because you knew I wanted her?”

“Yeah,” he admitted.

It surprised me, that he’d actually admit that to me. The guy was infamous for his fuckery. But I really didn’t think he’d ever cop to this one. I mean, he hadn’t so far.

So why now?

“I was pissed,” he said, “that you always got everything you wanted, just handed to you. For once, I wanted to see youfightfor something you wanted.”

He let that sink in, then brushed past me as he headed back into the house.

I met Lex’s eyes. He said nothing.

“Was anything he just said to me justified?” I asked him. Because I knew Lex would tell me the truth.

“I’m not getting in the middle of this,” he said. “But you’re both right. And you’re both wrong. And yes, you’re both idiots.”

I sighed.

He slapped me on the back and we wandered back into the house.

I found Devi behind the bar in the living room, where she was drinking with the boys.

It bothered me how well it suited her.

How much she looked like she didn’t even need me right now, as she mixed up cocktails in a shaker and poured them out into a row of martini glasses, in front of Shane, Johnny, and Noah, the drummer from Johnny’s band.

Three dudes, all leaning on the bar, chatting up my gorgeous wife.

I’dalwaysbeen intimidated by her. Because I wanted her and I couldn’t have her.

And now… because I didn’t really have her.
