He shrugged. “They’re based in Toronto.”

“How lovely.”

Shane smirked. “Grandma didn’t think so.”

“So… Lex has been disowned since birth?”

“He’s been disowned since before he even came into the world. His mom was disowned as soon as she hooked up with that man. Funny thing is,” he mused, “she wasn’t even with him long.”

“And the family still won’t take her back?”

“Nope. Grudges, huh? They run deep in some families. That family, especially.” He eyed me. “You sure you want to be a part of it?”

I wasn’t even sure how to answer that. I wan’t sure I wanted to be a part of that family, exactly.

But I wanted Dane. I wanted a relationship with him. I knew that much.

I wanted whatever part of him he’d let me have, for starters.

And I wanted to know if we could build on that.

I wanted to know if there was anything real between us. Anything that could last.

Considering he’d taken off, though, and sent his best friend to talk to me instead of doing it himself… I just didn’t know if he’d ever be able to trust me enough to really let me have any of him. Even if he wanted to.

Chapter Thirty-Nine

Devi

As soon as Shane had left, I got Jude on the phone. He was in Auckland with Dirty and I knew it was fucking early. But I couldn’t wait on this.

All I told him was that I needed his help with some serious shit, but I didn’t know if it was safe to talk about it over the phone.

And the first thing he said to me was, “Where are you? Are you safe?” His voice was rough like I’d just woken him up.

“Yes. I’m at Jesse’s place.”

Honestly, I would’ve called Jesse to tell him the same thing and have him talk to Jude for me. But I knew Jude. He’d be fucking pissed if I roped Jesse into any potentially dangerous shit. There was a deep line drawn there; Jude’s life in the motorcycle club, and Jude’s life as Dirty’s head of security. And Jude did not let Jesse over that line. He was very protective of Jesse, and I respected that. A lot. It was the reason I was calling him.

I was pretty sure he’d be willing to help me.

But maybe more importantly, I was pretty sure he had the power to be able to help me.

“How serious is this?” Jude asked me.

“Serious.”

“Stay where you are. I’ll get back to you.”

I thought I heard a female voice in the background.

“Thank you,” I said. “Tell Roni I’m sorry for waking you up.” Because this had to get old; her man getting woken up all the time, to save the day for whoever needed it. The motorcycle club. The band. And now, his best friend’s wife’s best friend…

“Roni’s fine, darlin’,” he told me. “She sends her love. I’ll call you back.”

He did call back, like ten minutes later.

“Car’s pickin’ you up in about thirty-five,” he told me. “My guys don’t know you, so do exactly what I say. Don’t bring shit with you. No purse, no phone. Just yourself. I’ll be in touch.”
