Marcus chuckled and nodded. ‘As serious as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs. What do you say?’
Excitement bubbled up inside Georgina, threatening to overflow. ‘Yes!’ she exclaimed. ‘Yes, I'd love to.’
Marcus clapped his hands together. ‘Excellent! We'll sort out the details tomorrow. For now, I'll leave you two to enjoy this beautiful evening. Come on, you pair of rascals,’ he called out to the two Huskies who were running amuck in the surf. ‘Let's head home.’
As Marcus and the dogs wandered off down the beach, Georgina turned to Matt, her face glowing with happiness. ‘Can you believe it? A full-time job at Ruff to Regal.’
Matt's response was to sweep her off her feet, literally. He picked her up and spun her around, both of them laughing with pure joy. When he set her down, his dark eyes were shining with pride and something deeper, something that made Georgina's heart race.
‘I'm so proud of you, Georgie,’ he said softly. ‘You deserve this. You deserve all the happiness in the world.’
The intensity of his gaze made Georgina's breath catch in her throat. The world seemed to narrow down to just the two ofthem, the sound of the waves and the cry of the seagulls fading into the background.
Slowly, Matt leaned in, his hands coming up to cup her cheeks. Georgina felt her eyes flutter closed as their lips met in a kiss that was soft and sweet and full of promise. It was a kiss that spoke of new beginnings, of fears faced and overcome, of a future full of possibilities. She felt as if she was melting into the sand.
When they finally pulled apart, the sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in a breathtaking array of colours. The last golden rays of light danced across the water, creating a shimmering path that seemed to stretch into infinity.
‘Breath taking,’ Georgina murmured, not sure if she was talking about the sunset or the man standing before her.
‘It really is,’ Matt agreed, his arm wrapping around her waist. ‘You know, Georgie, I can't promise that life will always be easy. I can't promise that we'll never face hardships or losses. But I can promise you this: whatever comes our way, we'll face it together. If you'll have me, that is.’
Georgina felt tears prick at her eyes, but this time they were tears of happiness. She turned to face Matt fully, taking both his hands in hers. ‘Matt Harris’ she said, her voice filled with emotion, 'I would be honoured to face whatever life throws at us, together.'
Matt's face broke into a radiant smile. He pulled her close, resting his forehead against hers. ‘You might think this is premature, but when you know, you know... I love you, Georgina Shelley,’ he whispered.
Georgina's heart soared. The fear that had held her back for so long seemed to melt away, replaced by a warmth that spread through her entire being. ‘I love you too, Matt,’ she replied, the words feeling right, feeling true.
As the last sliver of sun disappeared below the horizon, Matt and Georgina stood together on the beach, their silhouettes merging into one. The first stars began to twinkle in the deepening twilight, a reminder that even in darkness, there is always light to be found.
Georgina thought of her mother, of the legacy of love and community she had left behind. She thought of Matt's mother, who had faced her greatest fear to save a child. She thought of her father, who had found love again with Christine. And she thought of herself and Matt, standing on the cusp of a new chapter in their lives.
Life was unpredictable, yes. It could be scary and sometimes heartbreaking. But it could also be beautiful, filled with love and laughter and moments of pure joy. As Georgina nestled closer to Matt, listening to the steady beat of his heart, she made a silent promise to herself and to her mother's memory.
She would live fully, love deeply, and face each new day with courage and an open heart. Because in the end, it wasn't the fear of loss that defined a life well-lived, but the love shared, the connections made, and the memories created along the way.
As they turned to walk back along the beach, hand in hand, Georgina felt a sense of peace settle over her. The future stretched out before them, as vast and full of possibility as the sea itself. And whatever that future held, she knew that with Matt by her side and the love of her family and community behind her, she was ready to embrace it with open arms.
The sweet romance of Seagull Bay had brought healing, growth, and new beginnings. And as the stars twinkled overhead and the gentle waves lapped at the shore, Georgina and Matt walked towards their future, hearts full of love and hope, ready for whatever adventures lay ahead.
