I don’t want to stop.

I want to be in this moment forever, fucking her for the rest of my life because it’s never going to be enough.

But as high as my orgasm is, as sweet as the bliss is, reality is right on the fringes.

We lie together, panting heavily on the table for a few long moments.

Then the air chills slightly as the heat of lust dissipates.

Dove’s legs fall from my hips, she removes her arm from my shoulders, and somehow she slips out from underneath me with the gracefulness of a snake.

I’m still panting as I sit up on the table and watch Dove pluck her dress up from the floor and step into it.

In my haste, I didn’t spend enough time admiring her sexy garter or how those heels stayed on through sex, but she covers herself quickly in seconds.

“That was for old times' sake,” Dove gasps, adjusting herself and turning to face me.

“You enjoyed it.”

“That’s not the point.” She swipes her thumb over her lower lip, removing the smudge of her lipstick. “We danced. I did what you asked and gave you more than you deserve. You better keep your promise.”

“My promise?” Lust still lingers in my thoughts but Dove is back to her normal self already.

“Stay away from me. I’ve left this life behind for good reason. I have a new one. Stay away from me, okay? Stayaway.”

Every fibre of my being screams to touch her again, to pull her into my arms and kiss her softly but I’ll end up with one of the scattered porcelain shards in my throat if I do that.

“Okay,” I say with a deep, calming breath. “I’ll keep my promise.”

Despite looking unconvinced, Dove smiles. “Thank you. Goodbye, Felix. This was…” She glances around and picks her bag from the floor. “Goodbye.”

“Goodbye, Dove.” The words sour on my tongue and as I step back into my pants, I watch her pick her way to the door where Toph greets her to take her home.

This is one promise I will not be keeping.

“Why are you smiling like that?” Toph asks a few hours later as we drive up the winding driveway to Caterina’s Manor.

“Like what?”

“Like everything went your way.”

“It did, didn’t you see?” Relaxing back in the seat, I sigh deeply. “Everything is… amazing.”

“I’m confused.” Toph adjusts his grip on the steering wheel. “Dove was pretty clear. She left this life for a reason and from what she said, it’s a pretty good reason.”

“I know.”

“And if she’s telling the truth about the car then it’s some twisted joke of fate that she’s been dragged back in.”

“I know.”

Toph pulls the car to a stop in front of the Manor. “So you’re smiling like that because you got laid?”

“No, Toph.” I unbuckle myself and face him. “Dove is alive. She’salive. I don’t care if she hates me. I don’t care if she spends the rest of her life trying to kill me or even running across the world. She’s alive, Toph. And a world with her in it, even if she despises me, is a damn sight better than one without.”

“You’re ridiculous,” Toph laughs softly, turning on his music. “Good luck with Caterina.”

Ah, Caterina.
