“I freaking agreed to play at a brunch at a place in SoHo, or else I would still be face-down in my pillows right now, trying to sleep off this hangover from hell.”
“Must have been a good night,” I said, thinking of my own.
“Beer. Bourbon. Tequila. Everyone was buying me drinks after my set. They loved me.”
I felt a sudden pang of guilt for not being one of those people. I hadn’t even stayed through the entire set, let alone really watched him. I was too busy watching Juliet’s ample cleavage and sucking on her tongue. Still, I had gotten there early and Will and I had shared a drink backstage, so I wasn’tthatbad of a friend. At least, that was what I told myself.
“It was a hell of a set, man,” I said. “You’re really doing it.”
“You didn’t even stay for all of it,” he muttered.
Shit.
“What are you talking about?” I asked with a laugh. “Yes, I did.”
“Really? What was my last song?”
“You know…the one from college…that you played at that frat one night. You remember.” I hated that I was scrambling and sucking at it.
“Nice try. I saw you sneak out with that blonde chick.”
Caught red-handed.
“You sure it was me?” I asked, feigning innocent confusion.
“Tall guy in a suit that costs too much to be in a club like that. Yeah. Pretty sure it was you.”
I sighed. “Come on, Will. I stayed for almost the whole thing. It wasreallygood. I mean it.”
“I’m just giving you shit, man,” he said. “I don’t blame you for trying to get some.”
“Mhmm.”
“And did you?” he asked curiously.
“Did I what?”
“Get some!”
“Maybe…” I said nonchalantly.
“Didshethink I was good?” he asked, bringing the subject back to himself, which I was thankful for. He must not have recognized her from my phone when I told him about her livestreaming. Part of me was relieved.
“You definitely have a new fan.”
“Itwasa great show. I just probably shouldn’t drink the whole bar…” He made a puking noise on the other line.
It made me think of what Juliet and I had talked about, drinking the entire bar and then her inviting herself over. She had been so bold and forward. I was immediately turned on because she didn’t seem the type that did that for just anyone. It made me internally puff my chest with pride. Just like the livestream. It was definitely in thousands of people’s wank banks, and she hadn’t even done it intentionally.
“You better get out of bed for brunch…” I said.
“Yeah, yeah. Just wanted to call my best friend for him to tell me how good I was last night.”
“I don’t think your ego needs to be inflated any more. Have a good show.”
Will laughed and I heard the click on the other end of the phone. I set my phone on my desk and looked toward the closed door of my office, waiting for it to open and for Juliet to appear. I wasn’t sure why I didn’t tell Will who Juliet was when he asked about last night, or that I had taken up his suggestion of making “livestream girl” my personal assistant. I knew it had been a joke on his end, one I had initially laughed off. But I had actually gone and done it, and since his money was invested as a silent partner, I didn’t want him to question me or worry about how sleeping with an employee could tarnish the company.
This thing with Juliet was brand-new, and maybe it was nothing now. Maybe it had been a one-night thing that we would both move on from, though I was sure it would be hard to forget. I had told her I knew a thing or two about casual sex, and she still came home with me. Maybe she wasn’t looking for anything serious, just like I wasn’t.
