The feel of our bodies sliding against one another was pure bliss. She ground against me, and that was all it took for me to lose all self-control.
I devoured her mouth, running my tongue over that delightful gap in her teeth and biting at her lower lip.
“I need you.” The words were a desperate plea spoken into my mouth. “Now. Forever too…but now.”
She didn’t need to ask twice. I was ready at her entrance. “Take what you want, siren. I’d sooner drown than make you wait.”
She took my length in one hand between us, positioning me where she needed me. When I thrust up, deep into her, she gasped and stilled as though she might break right then.
The water around us glowed brighter. Its luminescence seemed to respond to her arousal.Interesting theory to explore later.Every thought of debauchery and position in the book ran through my mind at the sight of her riding me.
I wanted to bend her over the side of that tub and see what she felt like from behind. I wanted to let her hold me underwater between her lush thighs so I could taste her again as she found her release. I hadn’t been lying—I’d lose air for her.
There would be time for all of that, so much time.
In that moment, I needed to feel her with me, gentle, gasping the same air. I needed to see the look in her eyes when her flames lit. Her legs wrapped tight around me; her nails dug into my back.
When she finally cried out and her warmth contracted around me, she looked flushed and wilder than I’d ever seen her before. It was my new favorite expression of hers. One I intended to get very acquainted with.
The sensation of her tightening around me was too much to bear as she writhed above me, seeking the remaining waves of her climax. When I could no longer hold out, I slammed into her to the hilt. My body seized—I ruptured with her name on my lips.
Wildfire.
All the fire within me stoked to life—she mademespark to life. If I had to do it all over again, I’d happily wait another four hundred years in that damp, dark woodland for even a minute with her.
Our eternity would be made from the brightest fires and most vivid stars.
Chapter42
Asterie
We didn’t leave Fen’s bed for hours, though neither of us slept.
Instead, we spent the night stealing kisses and exploring each other’s bodies in between tearful explanations of all we had learned over the past days apart. Fen shared everything that happened after his powers returned, about nearly losing Elsie.
He hadn’t appeared to be breathing when I told him everything that had happened in the Central Tower, of my time spent in thatin-betweenplace, of waking up to the sight of stars over the bailey and wanting nothing more than him by my side.
We’d both felt so helpless in those moments.
He rubbed the back of my hand, which was splayed over his chest. The sun from the window created a golden glow over his freckled features.
“Queen Sybilla told you, then, about your claim over me?”
Fen stiffened. “She did,” he answered hesitantly.
“So, will you claim me then?”
He made a pleased sound in the back of his throat. “I’ve already claimed you twice,” he teased.
“That isnotwhat I mean.” I playfully swatted at him. “And you know it.”
Fen reached to the side table where a letter opener sat. He quickly cut a small line in his thumb and let his hand fall to the side of the bed. “No. I vow to never exercise that claim over you. The debt owed to my family for those stolen plums is null.”
As a drop of blood fell from his thumb, so did my heart. He didn’t want our fates tied.
My disappointment must have shown in my expression. He flipped onto his side, reaching for me.
“You misunderstand me,” he said as he cupped my cheek. “We could be re-bound—on our own terms and timeline. Not that you need my power. You command the stars above and a beast that used to be mine. What good do you have with some flame-throwing tricks? But that decision will never be mine. I would have never claimed you under that blood oath.”
