He frowned. “I rarely get recognized. On the contrary, people rarely believe nor care—”

“Yeah, okay, fine, sorry,” I mumbled and tried to brush past him, growling when he grabbed my arm and turned me to face him.

He instantly let me go and held up his hands. “Are you from Starhaven? Is that—” He flinched when someone shouted my stage name behind him. “Let’s get you out of here. Idiots are not happy that they have a gambling addiction and are idiots.”

Truer words were never spoken.

He was taller, so it helped, and we managed to slip out a door by the bar that most probably wouldn’t have thought I’d go through. He stayed with me though. “Are you from Starhaven?” He snickered when I shot him a look that there was no way I’d answer that. “Fair.”

“Have a nice night.”

“I did. I made some nice bank betting on you,” he chuckled.

That made me slow down and shoot him a look. “You bet on me?”

He nodded. “Don’t take this the wrong way, but you’re not the only female fighter I’ve seen that’s impressive. A fighter is a fighter no matter their sex and you’re afighter. I saw it the moment your dragon looked bored.” He cleared his throat when I kept walking. “You’re okay with that agent though, right? Avior? I heard he’s honorable. Sounds…”

Oh, thank fuck he didn’t see Myriam. That could have been a disaster and something we needed to think about. Of course some of the prospects might go out to have fun while in the capital. I mean I wouldn’t have thought underground fighting rings or gambling, but… Apparently I was as naïve as Velle said.

“I’m as safe as illegal anything is. He’s smart and a smart man doesn’t fuck me over. Now, good night.”

“Best of luck to you, Mystic Frost.” He let me go then but then called after me a few moments later. Against my better judgment, I glanced over my shoulder and what he said next shocked me. “I’m sorry for whatever happened that pushed you into this. Really. Life shouldn’t fuck us over this bad that we’re left with shit options. I hope it gets better.”

He turned and walked away before I could reply and that was good because I had no idea what I would even have said. Like… What did someone say to that?

I wasn’t sure, but I was pissed. He didn’t get to be the good guy after what he did to me as Sagan. Or was this how he treated women who he didn’t have to bow down to?

Yeah, that thought didnotmake me happy and I’d worked myself into quite the tizzy by the time I was back at the castle.

I blinked and realized I wasn’t heading to my room but Joris’s, and while what he needed confused me at times, I was very, veryglad I’d given in to my desires. In to what my dragons had wanted.

In to what I’d wanted as a queen and woman.

I was confused when he promised that he’d handle everything as he gave me a kiss at dawn before sneaking out of my room before anyone caught us. I had no idea what that was, but I trusted him. I probably shouldn’t after I’d trusted Thorn—or maybe even Onyx, but I was healing from that—but Joris was different.

He was… Different.

And I didn’t mean because he was submissive.

It also felt weird to refer to him as that because he really wasn’t. He was bold enough to tell me what he wanted and step up, so he just wasn’t dominant and a dipshit male.

Wasn’t that what we wanted more of as women?

I was in meetings all morning with Treena and Darren that involved different Alphas and issues. I received several updates on the police situation in the capital, and while it was progress, it mostly annoyed me that any of it wasneeded.

Really annoyed me—not just me from the way Darren kept rubbing his temples, so I was grateful the staff kept bringing us fresh tea and everything herbal to help. Honestly, with the level of stress we were under, we probably should have different healers on staff just for that.

One would think the queen would have the best healers at her disposal, right?

No, they quit. They didn’t want to work for an outsider after serving a king and elders.

My life really was a clusterfuck of crazy like that.

Fucking assholes.

“What do youmeanshe’s all over the news and social media?” Alpha Vex snarled on the call, glancing at someone off camera. “What did that stupid bitch do now?”

“Who are you talking about?” Darren chuffed.
