My head is shaking back and forth. “Absolutely not,” I argue.

“You don’t get a choice. I’ve got men out doing runs for the club, I’ve got Hex, Viktor, and Talon researching all that they fucking can. I cannot send anyone else,” he states firmly.

My gaze flickers to Silas. Exhaling a frustrated sigh, left with no choice but to relent. “Fine.”

“Fuck, I wasn’t expecting it to be that easy,” he mutters in surprise. “You can come back and forth to the club as and when; only together. Neither of you is to leave or go anywhere alone,” he adds.

“I know you wouldn’t be asking this of me if you didn’t have a reason, even though you won’t tell me,” I state with annoyance.

“Yeah, well, when we are certain of, well, anything,” he sighs, sounding exhausted. “You will be informed.” Lucian doesn’t say anything else; the line goes dead.

Silas slides the cell back into his pocket, his eyes watching me, waiting for me to say something. I shove the mop into hishand. “If you’re going to be staying here, then make yourself useful. We open in two hours,” I order before walking away.

CHAPTER TEN

SILAS

I watchher from the corner of the bar, laughing and flirting with the patrons. Even now, as a vampire, she warms the people around her. Her heart may have died that night, but her spirit never did. I catch her looking over at me every now and again. My cell vibrates on the table, distracting me. I answer it, not needing to see who it is.

“Yeah.”

“Silas.” Evelynn’s voice catches me off guard.

“Evelynn, is everything okay? Lucian?” I ask as concern and dread begin to swarm in my gut.

She lets out a small chuckle. “Yeah, everything is fine. Lucian let me use his phone to call you.”

I sag back in the chair, relaxing again. “So why are you calling me?”

“Okay. Just do me a favour and listen,” she says, her voice wavering slightly.

“Evelynn,” I press.

“Well, Lucian could have sent someone else to watch over Lilith,” she admits. “But I told him not to allow anyone else. Youand Lilith were friends once, and I think being stuck together for a while will do you good. Break the ice,” she adds cheerily.

“Evelynn, we are vampires. There’s every chance we’d tear each other’s throats out.”

“You won’t, because I’ve seen the way you look at her. And I know there’s more to it than everyone thinks. I can feel it,” she says. I rub my temples.

“Jesus fucking Christ,” I murmur.

“I know I’m not your favourite person, and I hate that. I don’t know why you don’t like me. But I can try and make you like me,” she adds.

“I’ve told you before, I don’t hate you,” I sigh.

“Yeah, you’ve warmed up to me. But I’m going to make you love me,” she says, laughing.

“No one else is allowed to love you,” I hear Lucian growl in the background. I smirk, envisioning him baring his fangs in possessive jealousy.

“Luci, shush. You’re interrupting,” she shushes him. She shushes the president of the Crimson Covenant MC, a man feared in the mortal world and beyond. I can’t contain the rumble of laughter that escapes me. My gaze lands on Lilith, who is watching me from the other side of the bar. For a brief moment, her gaze softens toward me. Maybe Evelynn is right; maybe she will soften toward me.

“I’m going to go,” I state as I listen to Evelynn argue with Lucian.

“Lucian, you need to lighten up. What are you doing? Oh,” Evelynn breathes down the phone. I quickly disconnect before I hear any more. The walls at the club may be thick stone, but that also means sounds echo.

I place my cell back on the table and continue to drink, watching Lilith and the mortals in the bar. She eventually walks over, taking a seat opposite me. Snatching my drink, she downsthe last of it. I arch my brow at her. “Do you normally help yourself to customers’ drinks?”

She wipes her mouth with the back of her hand, her rich green eyes spark with amusement. “Firstly, you’re not a customer. Secondly, I wanted to make sure it wasn’t poisoned, considering you were laughing. I thought you had been drugged,” she quips as she absently wipes the table down with her cloth.
