“Oh, I don’t know…I don’t think it’s not a good idea,” he stumbled through his words.

“C’mon, Davis, help your friend out,” Kelsey said.

Davis looked at her, surprised she’d encourage this. But of course, why wouldn’t she? She was not only a good friend to him, but she was also a good friend to Norah. If Kelsey didn’t think there was anything going on between the two of them and they were just friends, this would make sense. But things didn’t add up and he was more confused than ever.

“You sure?” He looked pointedly at Kelsey.

“Why would I care?” Her eyes challenged him right back.

A stiffness twinged in his neck and he gave an exaggerated shrug. “Okay, well I mean, if you don’t mind?”

“The kids and I will be fine.” She smiled.

But he knew her. And he knew that smile was fake.

“What about our conversation?”

“Let’s talk tomorrow night. At the costume party.”

“Fine,” he agreed, climbing off the picnic bench.

“Yay, thank you.” Norah jumped up, joining him.

“Now what am I supposed to do?” Maddie asked.

“I guess you get to take your pick between the two guys,” Kelsey replied, brows raised.

“Are you sure you aren’t ready to get back on that horse?” Maddie asked Kelsey.

Davis couldn’t resist, his eyes shifted to Kelsey just as hers flicked to him. Heat expanded in his chest. He wanted to say something. Instead, the sensual eye contact between them was enough to remind him, this thing between them wasn’t even close to being over.

“I’m sure. Maybe someday, but not yet.”

His shoulders relaxed.

“C’mon, Norah, let’s get some pumpkins and then I’ll take you home.” He held a hand out to her.

Norah smiled at him, setting her hand in his.

The two men from their double date headed toward them with candy apples.

“Thank you,” she whispered to him.

“Bye, kids. Be good for you mama,” Davis hollered. “See you tomorrow, Kelsey.”

“Oh, yeah, sure. Just go and leave me to explain. No problem,” Maddie complained as he and Norah began to walk away, hand and hand. “You be sure to tell that twin brother of yours I’m doing just fine without him.”

He nodded.

And Davis felt the eyes of everyone on he and Norah as they strolled away hand in hand.

CHAPTERSEVENTEEN

KELSEY

Monday was for new beginnings.

Or something like that. After she left the pumpkin patch and went home the day before, she’d held the business card Christian had given her and contemplated calling him. He was an investor who worked in Denver. She hated the idea of going into business with someone from the city. But since word had leaked around town that she was at risk of losing O’Henry’s, no one else had come forward and made her an offer. So, Kelsey had called Christian, and he agreed to meet her that morning before he headed out of town.
