She wasn’t sure how she’d be able to handle it once the time arrived because now, only thinking about it, caused a searing heat to travel through her body, creating a throbbing ache between her thighs.

CHAPTERTEN

DAVIS

Despite the severaltimes he and Kelsey had made the trip to Denver for concerts, this year was different. They’d shared an almost-kiss, and he’d touched her in ways that friends don’t touch. If Kelsey’s mom hadn’t interrupted them, Davis was certain he would’ve delved in and found out all the things he’d been wondering when it came to Kels, and activities that involved zero clothes.

It made zero sense. And all he was really sure of—he needed to stop thinking about it.

He needed to stop thinking of her.

Davis stepped out of the shower, wrapping a towel around his waist, and tucking in the edge at his hip. He looked at his reflection in the mirror as he raked his fingers through his damp hair.

Unfortunately, the cold shower hadn’t helped in the way he’d hoped. He was still worked up. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that he and Kelsey were about to spend a full twenty-four hours together. Alone. In a hotel room.

While them going and doing this together wasn’t unusual, it had been several years since they’d made this trip. And this would be the first one since Ricky passed, the first one since she was single again. Thinking about it like that made him feel gross. He was a jackass.

As he dressed in a pair of dark jeans, his nicest flannel and a North Face vest, his phone vibrated against the counter. Kelsey’s name displayed on the screen.

Kelsey: Change of plans.

Davis’s heart felt as if it stopped beating in his chest. Was she bailing on him?

Davis: What’s up?

Kelsey: Pick me up at the Whitleys instead of my place.

He exhaled a breath.

Davis: Will do.

Why the change in location he didn’t really care, she’d fill him in later. All he was relieved about was that she was still able to go. With running the bar, taking care of her kids, and helping her mom, any number of things could’ve interrupted their trip away this weekend.

Davis needed this getaway maybe as much as Kelsey did. Things with Garrett andRenovation Dudeshad him feeling as if he were suffocating. Between the tension with his brother and then the show’s producer, Franklin, suggesting he bring more sex appeal as they neared the last episode, he felt on edge.

Garrett was stretched out on the sofa, attention on his phone when Davis emerged from the bathroom. Cooper laid on his dog bed but perked up when he saw him. He probably sensed that Davis was fixing to leave him. He considered taking him along, leaving him with Garrett was a bit nerve racking.

Garrett cocked a brow at him. “You’re going to see an attorney dressed like that? You wanna borrow one of my suits?”

“I have my own suits,” he mumbled as he wrestled on his boots. “And I’m not seeing the attorney, Kelsey is meeting with him alone.”

“Then what’s the point of you going? I’m pretty sure Kelsey can drive herself, she’s a capable woman, that one.” He sat up and swung his legs over the edge of the sofa.

“Call it moral support.”

“Just seems like an unnecessary trip to the city when there’s plenty we could be doing here.”

Davis’s gaze snapped to his brother. “We?”

“Please tell me you’re at least getting some action out of this?”

Picking up a piece of paper off the kitchen island, Davis waved it in the air, signaling Garrett’s attention and ignoring his comment. “Here’s the instructions for Cooper. They’re simple—basically, don’t forget to feed him.”

Hearing his own name, Cooper bounded over to him and sat, wagging his tail. Davis petted the dog’s head and mumbled severalgood boys.

Garrett followed, walking him to the door. “Yeah, yeah, Coop and I will be fine. We get along great, don’t we, boy?”

Cooper barked in response as if in agreement.
