“I wasn’t hanging out with Kelsey the whole night.”
He’d talked to Leo for a bit too.
“Oh, that’s right,” Garrett continued. “You were also working. I saw you coming out of the O’Henry’s kitchen soaking wet.”
Davis grabbed the second 2x4 and Garrett took one end of it without being asked this time.
“I’m talking about arealnight out,” Garrett continued.
Davis knew what Garrett was going to suggest. That damn Halloween costume party no one could shut up about every fall. But dressing up as someone else for a night, being surrounded by loud, drunken idiots did not sound like his idea of fun.
But he might as well get the conversation over with.
“Let me guess, you want me to go to the Halloween party at O’Henry’s? Because that would count as a real night out?” he grunted.
“As long as you don’t offer to babysit Kelsey’s kids or fix anything for her, then yes, it counts.”
Davis sighed, as he used the screw gun to attach the board. “I’ll think about it.”
“I swear, you have a real boner for her.”
Davis jerked his attention at his brother, his heartrate suddenly up. “For who?”
“For Kelsey.”
“Shut the hell up. You don’t know what you’re talking about,” he retorted, his throat tight. So maybe he felt caught in his recent conflicting feelings for Kelsey, but that didn’t mean he was ready to discuss them. Especially not with Garrett.
“Everyone knows it. I don’t know who you think you’re fooling.”
“Just because I’m a good human doesn’t mean I have a...” he paused. “A thing for Kelsey. We’re friends.”
“Friends with benefits.” Garrett wagged his brows.
His body went rigid, he felt defensive for their relationship, and yet he’d be lying if he said his mind hadn’t danced over the idea of that the past twenty-four hours.
The assistant director, Sandy, approached them, her attention wavering between them, before landing on Garrett.
“Hey, guys, how we doing? Am I interrupting?” Sandy greeted, tucking her long, curly red hair behind one ear.
“Hey, Sandy,” Garrett said, flashing her a wide-white-toothed smile.
Inwardly, Davis groaned, though he couldn’t restrain an eye roll.
“Nope. Just the normal disagreement,” Davis admitted.
Garrett waved him off. “He’s kidding. We’re fine.”
“Are we just about ready to pick up on the next shot?” She glanced at Garrett, who looked to Davis for instruction.
“You wanted the fireplace completely framed in before we began shooting again and it’s almost done.”
“Great. I’ll let the crew know.” Her focus lingered on Garrett.
Davis nodded at her. Not that she noticed, since she was busy checking out his brother.
She stepped closer to Garrett, her eyes blinking rapidly as she lowered her voice ever so softly. “So, Garrett...I was wondering if you had a date to the couples Halloween costume party? The one at O’Henry’s.”
“A date?” Garrett coughed into his fist.
