“These are amazing,” I mused, bending my foot as I admired them.

“Then my work here is done,” he said regally, offering a dramatic bow. “I shall see you on Monday.”

“Monday works.” I turned in my chair, smiled at him over my computer screen.

“What’re your plans for Thanksgiving?” he asked, moving toward the door.

Thanksgiving? My gaze shot to the calendar. Holy crap. Next Thursday was Thanksgiving, which meant the office would be closed for two days, holidays that had already been prescheduled for the yearly calendar.

“I … uh … don’t know yet.”

I figured that sounded better than telling him I would be at home alone because I didn’t have any family to spend Thanksgiving with. I hadn’t spoken to my father in months, and because of his bitterness, I doubted I would be seeing him anytime soon. I’d considered taking a trip to Vegas next week to oversee some of the changes I’d requested. It looked as though that was out of the question now.

“What about you?” I asked, feeling the scrutiny of his gaze.

“I’ll be spending it with my brother and his wife. They live in Jersey, invited me down.”

“That sounds like fun.”

“It is.” His grin widened. “I’ll probably spend most of it inhaling the sweetness of their new baby. My nephew’s like this perfect little doll.”

The thought of this exuberant man interacting with a newborn made me smile. I imagined he would make an awesome uncle. Probably an amazing dad one day, too. He certainly had the energy for it.

“Sounds like fun.”

Emmett smiled. “Well, I’ll leave you to it. I’ve got to go find some trouble to get into. It is Friday night in the big city.”

I stared at him, an idea forming. “Have you ever been to Obsession?”

His eyebrows slowly inched higher on his forehead. “Only in my dreams. I’ve been trying to get in there for months.”

I smiled. “Would you like to go tonight? I’ve got a couple of friends I need to sync up with, figured it’s as good a place as any.”

“You know that line’ll be around the block, right?”

“I know people,” I told him, feeling good that I could say something like that. “We’ll skip right on by the line.”

Emmett continued to stare at me, eyes wide, mouth hanging open.

“Is nine o’clock too early?” I asked, holding back a laugh at his reaction.

“Primetime,” he chirped.

“I’ll meet you there. Just tell the bouncers you’re my guest. They’ll have your name.”

He nodded emphatically, still staring but now he was smiling. “Now I’ve got to find something to wear.”

I could see his mind beginning to wander, so I said, “I’ve got a few more things to do here. I’ll see you tonight.”

“With bells on, boss. Tata for now.”

I stared at the space where he’d been. I was still smiling when I heard footsteps approach. Expecting to see Zena, I was pleasantly surprised when Kieran’s enormous form loomed in the doorway.

“You look good behind that desk,” he said by way of greeting.

“Hi.” I was on my feet, moving toward him before I thought better of it. “What’re you doing here?” I went up on my toes and pressed a kiss to his mouth without even thinking.

“Mmm,” he mumbled, his fingers brushing my hair back over my shoulder. “I should stop by more often.”
