“Fine,” I bit out before he could free the button on his jeans.

Kieran smirked and went back to working at the stove, now shirtless, his impressive back muscles shifting and flexing as he moved.

Nope, certainly not helping the arousal.

“Knox invited me to have dinner with him,” I said, forcing my thoughts out of the gutter.

“Did you want to?”

I avoided looking at Knox when I said, “No.”

“Why?”

Okay, clearly Kieran wasn’t going to make this easy on me. He didn’t seem to care that anything I said had the potential of pissing Knox off. Or worse, upsetting him.

“Because I was scared of him,” I admitted.

Kieran slowly pivoted around. “Scared? That he’d hurt you?”

I stared up at him, shook my head. “That I would like him.”

“Ah.” He whirled the spatula in a circle. “Please continue.”

Somehow I managed to detail the evening, how Kitty had tried to make me go to bed, how Knox had put her in her place, how I’d had my first taste of alcohol and hated it, and how we’d attempted to have dinner but it was derailed when Knox kissed me.

“Did you not like it?” Kieran asked as though Knox wasn’t sitting just six feet away.

“Of course I did,” I said before I could stop myself. “I’d just never been kissed before that.”

“But you’ve been kissed since then?”

I nodded, my gaze on the mug in my hands. “Yesterday. When you kissed me.”

A soft chuckle sounded. “You are so very sweet, love.”

I didn’t feel sweet.

I felt … embarrassed.

And yes, still very,veryaroused.

It was damn near impossible not tolook at Emily as she relayed the story of the night she sealed my fate. It hadn’t been enough that she’d changed my entire existence years before then, but that night, she’d altered everything for me.

I saw the way the color in her cheeks rose as she spoke, could practically feel the hum just beneath her skin. She was remembering more than the meal that had abruptly ended when I sent her to her room.

As she spoke, I fought the urge to look at Kieran as he worked shirtless at the stove. I should’ve known he would do something like this, somehow manage to put me on the spot without forcing me to out myself.

“What happened next?” Kieran prompted.

“Nothing.” Emily continued to stare into her mug. “Knox ordered me to go to my room, so I did.”

Kieran chuckled. “So you’re telling me Knox broke your heart because he sent you to your room?”

“What?” Her head snapped up. “No.”
