My father shook his head, met Kitty’s gaze. “He has my signature on the papers.”
“Yours,” Kitty snapped. “Notmine.”
“He doesn’t need yours, honey,” Rhett told her, sounding sorrowful.
“What’s going on?” I asked, too worried to be the dutiful, silent daughter.
Kitty glared over at me, then snatched the documents from my father’s hand. She turned to face me and waved them in my face.
“This isyourfault.”
“Kitty,” Rhett admonished. “You know that’s not true.”
“Itistrue,” she snapped. “If only he had wanted her, if only…” Her eyes flashed but she didn’t finish her sentence, instead choosing to shove past me, marching toward the back of the house.
Wanted me? What was she talking about? Did she know about what happened last night?
I shook off the thought and turned toward my father. “Daddy? What’s going on?”
“Knox,” he said, as though that explained it all.
“What about him?”
“He’s taking it all,” he said firmly, his voice low. “The house, the cars. Delta June’s.”
I frowned, staring back at him, trying to process what he was saying, but it didn’t make any sense at all. Was thismyfault?
“I don’t understand.”
His gaze swung past me to where Kitty had disappeared. “I need to take care of Kitty. She’s upset.”
Who cared that she was upset? I needed answers.
He started walking in the direction Kitty had gone.
“What’s going on, Daddy?” I called after him, knowing better than to follow.
“I’m sorry, Emily, but it looks like you’re on your own now.”
On my own?
He didn’t even bother to look back when he said, “You’ve got a week to find another place to live. And I’m sorry, but it won’t be with us.”
Obsession
