“I do. It’s all good, Bianca. I promise.”

“Does that mean they’ll be accompanying you to the winter carnival?”

Oh, crap. She’d forgotten all about the carnival, which was next weekend.

“Bristol?”

“I … uh … I don’t know yet,” she said softly. “We’re takin’ this one day at a time.”

“Oh, come on. I am dyin’ to see the look on everyone’s faces when they see you arm in arm with a couple of smokin’-hot cowboys.”

“Bianca, you can’t tell anyone,” Bristol blurted, her panic setting in. “Seriously. I don’t want anyone to know.”

She was met with silence again.

“Bianca?”

“I’m here,” her friend replied. “Why? Why don’t you want the world to know you’re happy?”

“Because it’s… No one’ll understand. I’d prefer we kept it quiet. Please.”

“For how long?”

Bristol shrugged although she knew her friend couldn’t see her. “I don’t know.”

“And if it gets serious?”

Can’t get much more serious than having a baby together.

“I’ll deal with that if the time comes. Until then, I just … I wanna enjoy them all to myself for a little while.”

“Good for you.”

She wasn’t sure any of this was good. Honestly, Bristol hadn’t been dwelling on the notion others would find out. She’d managed to shove that panic down at least temporarily. Locked up here in her house, where no one could see her, that was easy to do. Once she was back at work tomorrow, no doubt she would be wondering who else knew the truth.

“You can’t tell anyone, Bianca,” she repeated. “Not even the girls.”

“I won’t. Sheesh. You act like I can’t keep a secret.”

Depended on the secret, Bristol knew.

A knock sounded on her door, drawing her attention. With the phone to her ear, she got to her feet, padded over, and looked out through the security hole.

“Oh, crap,” she muttered, sitting up quickly.

“What’s wrong?”

“Kaden’s here.”

Bianca laughed. “Then I’ll be letting you go now. Have fun! Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”

The call disconnected and she was left standing there, feeling stupid. She peeked out once more, saw Kaden still standing on her porch, his Stetson on his head.

With a deep breath, she pulled open the door and smiled brightly.

His smile was instant, but it faded just as quickly when his gaze dropped.

Well, crap.
