She didn’t make it before he was there, standing in front of her, blocking the exit.

“I need to go,” she insisted. Otherwise it was possible she was going to break down into an emotional mess.

“He didn’t mean it,” Kaden said softly. “He’s bein’ an ass. That’s what he does when he’s worried he might like a woman.”

Like.

Not love.

No, Keegan would never love her. She knew that. It shouldn’t have bothered her, but it did.

“I need to go,” she repeated.

“Bristol.”

She took a deep breath, steeled herself for looking into his eyes, then did just that. “What?”

“Don’t go. Stay with me tonight.”

Her head began an incessant shake. “Oh, no. No, no. Not a good idea. I need to get home.”

“I won’t beg,” he said, his tone shifting to something she didn’t recognize.

Narrowing her eyes on his face, she let her shame wash over her. “I don’t want you to.”

Kaden took a step back as though her words had been a physical slap. When he did, she made a dash for the door, flinging it open and racing out into the night. When she was behind the wheel of her car, she shoved the key in the ignition and prayed the ornery thing would start. It was touch-and-go these days, and the last thing she needed was to be stuck there after her hasty retreat.

Her stomach churned at the thought as she turned the key, sending up silent prayers.

Thankfully, they were answered.
