That was real.
Her breath catches. She steps in, cups my jaw, and kisses me again.
No hesitation.
No fear.
Just truth.
My hand slides to her waist, pulling her in, grounding myself as much as her.
When we finally break apart, I exhale.
“Okay.”
She nods. “Okay.”
Blaze leans out the window. “Hate to interrupt, but whoever’s messing with you? They’re not waiting.”
Yeah.
Neither are we.
I open the passenger door for her.
She gets in—not like someone I’m protecting.
Like someone stepping into the fight.

The road narrows as we head north.
Gravel replaces pavement. Trees close in. Less traffic. Less visibility.
Exactly where I’d go if I wanted to disappear.
Or set a trap.
“Signal’s stronger,” Blaze says from the back, eyes locked on his tablet. “Whoever called? They didn’t go far.”
“Or they want us close,” Trigger mutters.
Yeah. That.
I ease off the gas, scanning the treeline.
Nothing.
No movement. No vehicles.
Doesn’t mean a damn thing.
“Kill the lights,” I say.
Darkness drops over us. Moonlight barely cuts through the branches above.
