This summer has flown by. Kailey and I have been inseparable ever since our double date with her sister and my brother, the only exception being when she works or has a girls’ day. We spend most of our days hanging out on my property or down by the river with her friends. The friends I’m now lucky enough to call my own. Greg and Steffan are actually my best friends here. Steffan is a local firefighter and has mentioned multiple times that if I’m ever bored, I could enlist at his station as a volunteer.

But there’s been no boredom for me in my life. I’ve kept myself busy, finishing up our renovations on the house, and any other free time has been spent with a certain dark-haired goddess. If it means there can be more fun to be had at fire stations, maybe I’ll take him up on that offer once Kailey’s college courses start back up.

Joey’s been busy, too, now that I think about it… He’s been gone more than he’s been at home. I just assumed he’s been spending that time with Beth.

Kailey’s classes will start back up in a few weeks, and the last weekend before is her big twenty-first birthday. Our friends andI have planned a party in my barn—the side that’s not occupied with gym equipment.

So instead of giving her my gift during her actual birthday party, I plan on doing it tonight. I’ve planned a romantic night under the stars, just like the first time we spent the night in each other's arms. The box in my pocket contains a heart pendant necklace formed by little diamonds, a carat. My picnic box is stocked with all her favorites—milk chocolate peanut butter with thin pretzels—and the cooler has Jock’s Strawberry Lemonade for her and beer for me.

I hear the exhaust of her Camaro before I see it coming down my driveway. Her T-tops are off, and the wind scatters her long black hair in all directions. Big black sunglasses cover over half her face, her dimples making an appearance as she honks and eagerly waves in my direction.

I hop off of my tailgate and make my way to open her door. She jumps into my arms, wrapping her legs around my hips. Kailey grabs my face, kissing me so deeply my knees almost buckle. Every time I see her, my heart feels like it physically stutters. Carrying her to the trunk of her car, I sit her on it and grind in between her open thighs, letting her feel what she does to me. She moans as I nibble down her neck.

Before I get too caught up in the moment, I force myself to stop and pull back. I give her a quick peck on the lips, and they quickly turn into a pout. She’s wearing a white halter top with sunflowers on it, dark jean shorts, and white flip-flops that show off freshly painted yellow toenails. Her face is free of any makeup. I know she spent her day at a pool with her girlfriends. She’s got a fresh tan line from her swimsuit top, and her shoulders are a little rosy.

I grab her hips tightly. “As much as I want to stay right here and continue to kiss you, we have plans, Dimples.”

Kailey claps her hands together. “Oh yes! My surprise! Let’s get the T-tops on, and then I am yours for the taking.” She slides down off the trunk, pinning herself between the car and my body.

Fuck. Those words go straight down to my dick.

The scent of coconut lingers in the air, with a touch of lavender, mint, and pears—tanning lotion and the perfume I crave to be around.

We work together quickly to get the T-tops in place, and once that’s done, I grab her hand and lead her to my single cab Chevy. After tonight, I don’t plan on ever selling it. Not only is this cherry red truck a beauty that was left for me by my grandpa, it’ll also carry so many memories of Kailey and me.

I drive her down to the bank next to the pond on my land. The sun is on its way down, casting a show of yellows and oranges across the top of the water. A fish jumps within the pond, causing ripples to form, while a bullfrog croaks close by, hoping to find a mate for the night.

Once the thick quilt I brought is set out on top of the grass, I organize all the food as Kailey grabs each of us our preferred drink.

“Jared, this is perfect. I will never get tired of this view you have.” She lays back on her elbows, looking around before her eyes lock on mine. Her eyes remind me of the sun shining through a whiskey bottle.

“What? Do I have something on my face?!” She swats a hand to her cheek, feeling if there’s anything there.

I can’t help but laugh because she’s so damn cute.

I shake my head. “No, baby, there’s nothing on your face. I just can’t get enough of you.” My thumb brushes lightly across her cheekbone. There are knots forming in my stomach; I’m trying to keep them at bay, not wanting to lose my nerve on thewords that are about to leave my mouth. I need to get this all out there…

“You have become my everything, Kailey… I want to spend every waking minute with you, and I miss you when you don’t fall asleep in my arms.”

Those hazel eyes start to shimmer, causing the green in them to expand. She slowly rises and crawls onto my lap, straddling me. Her lips linger over mine and I can smell the strawberry flavor on her tongue from the drink.

“I love you so much…” Fisting her hair, I pull her lips to mine, crashing us into each other. The need I have for her is unlike anything I’ve experienced before. I want to burrow myself underneath her skin.

Pulling back, we’re both breathing hard, cheeks flushed. Kailey grabs my cheeks firmly, giving my bottom lip one hard suck.

“I love you too, Jared. This summer has been the best summer of my life. I don’t want any of it to end.”

I place my forehead against hers. “Nothing is going to end between us, Dimples. The time we’ve spent together, it’s just the beginning of our story. I am yours; your mark has been made on me from the first time I laid eyes on you.”

“And I am yours.” She seals her statement with a long deep kiss that sends a pulse through me, down to my toes.

I shift to my side, so I can grab the box that’s digging into my ass through the pocket of my jeans.

Kailey’s eyes go big as she studies the black box in my hand, and her jaw drops. My stomach is already a bundle of nerves from telling her I love her, and now giving her this gift that I hope she’ll love.

A breath escapes from my lips, my palms are sweaty, and I have a tremor in my hand as I try to take the lid off of her gift.
