Ransom stands, and moves to Jonas, laying a heavy hand on his shoulder. “Come sit down,
brother. Let’s talk it out.”
Jonas shrugs off Ransom’s hand. “I don’t want to sit down. Janey does not have a home. Why
aren’t we out looking for her?”
“I’ll grab my computer. I’ll start digging. I’ll figure out what’s going on, I promise,” Declan says.
He doesn’t waste any time jogging from the penthouse. Jonas seems to deflate a little now that he
understands we’re taking him seriously.
“Tell me what happened tonight,” I ask. I don’t know what the hell I can do, but if I can fix this, I
will. No way can I stand by and do nothing.
“We…argued tonight. She left, but I realized she had forgotten her jacket.” His features pinch
tight. “It’s cold outside. She needs her coat Zach.”
“I could call the shelters,” Evie offers quietly. Jonas visibly flinches at the idea of Janey in a
shelter.
“Why would she be there? I am her friend. She knows she can come to us…doesn’t she? I…I
don’t understand.”
Maya rises and moves to Jonas, taking his hand and drawing him to the couch to sit. “We don’t
always know what people are going through. She might have been embarrassed, or maybe she’s
sitting warm and cozy in a new apartment.”
“Cozy and warm? Maybe,” he mutters, staring at the floor. His hands are twisting and rubbing.
His shoulders are up around his ears. I watch him carefully, ready to support him in anything he
needs.
He pushes to his feet. “I can’t stay here. I’m going out to look for her. I’ll drive all night if I have
to.”
Evie nods from her spot at the table, phone pressed to her ear. “I’ll call you if I learn anything.”
Jonas nods grimly. “Declan needs to call me if he figures anything out.”
He takes a step to the door, and all of us stand. Like we share a brain, we all follow him. He
stops, turning slowly to face us.
“What are you doing?”
