“Dogs, I was thinking about dogs.”

His lips quirk. “I think maybe I should be offended. I’m sitting here, putting my best moves on

you, and you’re thinking about animals?”

“These are your best moves?” I ask in surprise. His eyes widen, and he barks out a laugh.

“Ouch,” he says, shaking his head. “Way to kill my confidence, woman.”

“I think you’ll be fine,” I say dryly, loving the banter. The man knows he’s got the best moves.

They’re the only moves I’ve experienced, but I don’t need to compare them to anything to know

they’re the best.

“Something’s wrong,” Jonas says, his voice carrying from the other side of the couch. Zach sits up

straighter, his arm tightening around my shoulder. Jonas is frowning at Janey, his hands clenched into

fists on his knees. “You are not acting like yourself. I don’t like it.”

The pain and disappointment I saw earlier on her face is still there. He’s right, something is

wrong. But it doesn’t look like Janey has any intention of sharing her problems.

His face is pained as he hurries to smooth things over with her. “Wait. I apologize. I did not mean

to upset you. I can go.”

She smiles softly and puts a hand on his arm. His whole body stills as he stares at her. “I’m tired.

It’s time for me to go. Stay and enjoy your evening. I’ll see you at work tomorrow.”

He nods reluctantly. “I’ll escort you to your car.”

She’s already shaking her head. “No, that’s not necessary. I don’t have my car today. I’ll just order

a ride.” She pulls out her phone, and Jonas visibly puffs up with his deep inhale. The man looks like

he wants to pick her up and carry her anywhere she wants to go.

“I’ll drive you,” he says decisively, nodding his head, the matter settled as far as he’s concerned.

But Janey frowns and rakes her hand through her golden brown hair.

“Jonas, I appreciate your concern. But I have a ride coming. I’m fine.”

He plants his hands on his hips, his lip curling into the smallest of sneers. “He’s coming to get
