He grinned. “Explain.”

“Well,” she said, bobbing her eyebrows and catching her breath at last. “I’m totally in love with you, and I have been since the day you stole Victor from me…” She paused to wait for his response, but Lee shook his head.

“I’m ignoring that little jab so you’ll keep talking about how much you love me.”

“Right. Yes. Well, I do love you, and I’ve never been in love, and, so far, you’ve taught me that it’s pretty great.”

His grin turned smug, and he nodded proudly.

“Of course, this is only my first try,” she teased. “So, who knows? The next one might be—”

She saw Lee’s eyes go wide before his arms came around her, and he silenced her with a kiss. She snickered against his mouth at first, but he pressed on, parting her lips with his tongue and entering her mouth, kissing her slowly. Deeply. Thoroughly. Kissing her until her heart stirred and her body simmered.

“You,” she promised, panting again. “I’ll love only you.”

“Good,” he said, catching a lock of hair and tucking it behind her ear. “Because I’ll love you for the rest of my life.”

Wren smiled. She knew he meant it. He would love her for the rest of his life, and it would be a great life.

“Yes, do that,” she said, nodding. “What else should we do?”

Lee pretended to think. “Well… first you’ll cover me with tattoos…”

Wren laughed.

“You think I’m joking,” he deadpanned. “Tights covering your legs and tats covering my skin are no joking matter.”

She laughed again, and this time he joined her.

“And you’ll make fried peach pies every week…”

“Uh, no.” She shook her head. “We’d both get fat. Plus, they take a lot of work.”

Lee pretended a sigh. “Okay. You’ll make peach pies for my birthday.”

“Okay.” She nodded.

“And Thanksgiving.”

“Sure.”

“And Christmas,” he said, laughing with her again.

Wren made a mental note to surprise him with fried peach pies on days that weren’t special occasions. “Peach pies and tattoos. Got it.”

Lee’s eyes danced, and she knew there was more. “And I’ll teach you how to swim better so I won’t be worried about you falling out of the kayak.”

Wren shook her head. “Don’t bother. I know I’m always safe with you.” She wanted him to know that this was no joke. “No one’s ever made me feel this safe.”

He held her look, and his eyes warmed. Then he raised a brow and worked his mouth, seeming to hesitate.

“What?” she prompted, loving this new game that wasn’t at all a game.

Lee nodded, making up his mind. “In that case, I’ll teach the kids to swim.”

Wren sucked in a breath. “Kids?” she squeaked.

It wasn’t a surprise that Lee Hawthorne wanted kids, that he should have kids. He’d be an awesome father. The best father in the world. What she hadn’t considered was that he’d want to have kidswith her.
