“Jerry Maguire.”
“Jerry Maguire?”
“You know the scene where Tom Cruise goes to pick up Renee Zellweger to go to dinner?”
“Yeah.” She nodded, but recognition didn’t register on her face.
“He tells her that’s not a dress; it’s an Audrey Hepburn movie, and that’s what you are.”
Her face lit up. “That’s who I was for Halloween. I was Audrey Hepburn fromBreakfast at Tiffany’sbecause Callie loved that movie when she was little, and she still loves it.”
“Bella really misses Callie.”
“Callie misses Bella.” The corners of her mouth tilted up in a sad smile before she rested her head on my shoulder.
I ran my hands up and down her back. As we danced together, the rest of the people in the room, hell in the world disappeared. Nothing else existed but the two of us.
When the song stopped and she stepped out of my arms, my heart dropped to the floor.
“I should probably get going.”
“I can give you a ride.”
She bit her lip as she looked up into my eyes, and the same desire that I felt was mirrored back to me. But instead of giving into it, she shook her head. “No, it’s your party.”
“Please,” I asked. “There’s someplace I want to show you.”
“There is?” she asked.
“Yes.”
She took a breath. “Okay.”
Whatever else happened tonight, this was the best birthday I’d ever had because I was leaving with Skye. Being with her was all I wanted, and in that moment, it made up for all the others.
