It also meant that there was no way she’d be on my arm for the gala event. That thought disappointed me much more than I would’ve thought, especially since I’d had no plans to invite her in the first place.

The car pulled into the underground parking garage in my building and after a quick goodbye to Frank I headed up to the penthouse. Even after living here for nearly five years, it still didn’t feel like home. And I didn’t think it ever would. How could any place feel like home without Ash and AJ in it?

The elevator doors opened and as soon as they did, I saw a blur running toward me.

“Daddy!” Lexi raced up to me at full speed. Her dark curls bouncing with each step.

I bent down as she launched herself into my arms.

I closed my eyes reveling in this moment. I knew that these times weren’t going to last forever. There was going to come a time that I would walk through those doors, and she’d be too interested in her phone or whatever new device they’d come up with by then, to even notice or care that I was home.

But for now, this day, today, I was her whole world.
