He nodded. “I know.”

“They’ll be here any minute.”

“They already are here?” he stated.

I glanced over my shoulder thinking that he must have seen them walk up and they’d witnessed our kiss.

No one was there.

“Where?” I asked as I turned my head and looked back up at him.

“Right here.”

My brow furrowed.

“It’s us.”

I wasn’t sure if it was pregnancy brain or the fact that I’d just woken up from a catnap and wasn’t firing on all cylinders, but whatever the reason, I had no clue what was going on. Until… he got down on one knee and he had a ring box in his hand. I gasped and clapped my hand over my mouth. “What are you doing?”

“Life doesn’t always work out the way you plan. I know that. I just always thought of that being a bad thing. It was always something or someone being taken away from me. But that changed when I met you. You were not something I planned. In fact, I didn’t see you coming at all. But from the first time I saw you, I was drawn to you. I tried to resist it, to resist you, but it was undeniable. The first time you looked at me, you saw me. There was a connection, something, or someone was pulling us together.

“You told me once that you always thought you were going to save the world. Well, you saved me. You saved my world. I never thought I could feel again, trust again, love again…” Tears formed in Alex’s eyes, but he sniffed them away. “But I love you, Sadie. I love you with every cell in my body.

“You have the biggest heart of anyone I know. You see the best in people, even when they can’t see it in themselves. You are amazing with Lexi and exactly the sort of woman I want her to see as an example. You are hard working. Loyal. Smart. Funny. Resilient. Brave.

“I love you Sadie Burke, and I was wondering if you’d do me the honor of being my wife?”

“Yes!” I nodded as tears poured down my face. “Yes!”

Alex opened the box and pulled the solitaire diamond ring out of it and slid the ring on my finger. When I saw it, I gasped. It was my mother’s ring and my grandmother’s before her. The one that I’d always hoped I would wear.

My father had always kept it in a safe in his room. He’d only taken it out to show me a half dozen times.

“Where did you? How did you?” I asked as Alex slid the ring on my finger.

He just smiled as he stood, cupped my face, and kissed me. It was a sweet, tender, forever sort of kiss. I was lost in it when I heard cheering.

I pulled back when I felt arms wrap around me. I looked down and saw Lexi hugging us both tightly. I looked around and saw Maddox, Mia, Nick, Bella, Hannah, Mrs. G and Yana enter from the back of the bakery. Then I turned my head and saw Charli, Mrs. Flores, Mr. Harris, Gloria, and my dad all enter from the front.

“Daddy!” I hugged him tightly.

“Congratulations, Pumpkin.” He held me tightly.

“Thank you! How long are you staying?” I hoped it was for at least a week.

“Well, now that depends.”

“Depends on what?”

“On whether or not the apartment is still available.”

“The apartment?”

“I put everything in storage and bought a one-way ticket.”

“You did?!” I looked over at Alex.

“Did you know?”
