I nodded. “Yes.”

He closed his eyes and for a moment I thought he was going to stand up and leave. His jaw ticked and I noticed the gleam of a tear in the side of his shut lid. Then he leaned forward, pressed his cheek to my belly, and wrapped his arms around my waist.

I looked down and ran my fingers through his hair. My entire world narrowed to a pinpoint. Nothing else mattered than this man, Lexi, the life growing inside of me and the family we were creating.

“I love you,” he whispered to our unborn child.

A smile spread on my face as joy infused my veins.

Then, I heard the sound of the lock turning and I tensed. “My dad doesn’t—”

Before I finished my sentence Alex was back on his feet. He quickly wiped his face as I sat back down on the couch. I was thirty-five years old, a business owner, and about to be a mother of my own child, but was scared for my dad to catch me standing up and not seated as he’d instructed.

The door opened. “I had to go to three stores to get sweet pickles.” He said as he walked in and shut and locked the door behind him.

“Dad,” I said.

He looked up and for the first time noticed Alex.

“This is Alex Vaughn. Alex this is my father, Thomas Burke.”

Alex stepped forward; his hand outstretched.

“Nice to meet you, sir.”

My dad nodded and shook his hand. “Good job with the security system. I’ve felt a lot better since it was installed.”

I couldn’t help but grin. My dad didn’t really do pleasantries. The two men continued talking about the system as they walked into the kitchen. I watched as my dad put the contents of his bag away and talk about how unsecured the apartment had been.

I pressed my hand to my stomach and sniffed back tears. I was so lucky that my baby would have two such incredible men in their life. The luckiest baby in the world.
