“Yeah, he wants me to review some case files,” I explain. I don’t know why I’m suddenly breathless.

“He sounds nice,” Killian muses.

“You didn’t even hear him,” I counter.

His eyes roam over my face, hand reaching out to brush against my flushed cheeks. “You seemed flustered when talking to him.”

“He’s very attractive, I get a little nervous.” I giggle nervously, both because Aiden is attractive and Killian is making me slightly nervous.

“And he asked you out for drinks.” Killian raises an eyebrow.

Is he jealous? Surely not.

“To celebrate my first day. Not for nefarious reasons,” I say.

“Are you sure about that?” He continues brushing the back of his fingers along my cheeks.

“Of course! I can have drinks with someone I find attractive, it’s not a big deal. Right?”

“Wrong,” Killian says. His hand lowers, wrapping around my throat. The cool press of the metal of his rings against my heated skin makes me shiver. I swallow thickly, my heart pounding inside my chest. There’s a possessive fire in his eyes which ensnares me in it’s grasp.

I realize that I’m already so far gone I’ll cross any limits forhim. I’ll have second thoughts, I’ll probably go back and forth, but in the end, I’ll do anything he wants.

Because he makes me feel safe.

“You belong to me, butterfly,” he continues, his eyes heated. “You always have. And it’s time you realize that.”

I already do.

I lick my lips, my eyes dropping down to his. I expect him to kiss me. Instead, he surprises me by releasing my neck and taking a step back. His eyes rake over me lasciviously, like he already imagines me naked, and I feel myself grow wetter.

Killian’s eyes meet mine, bold and possessive.

“Take off your dress.”

CHAPTER 26

Caroline

His command takesme by surprise and has my body throbbing with need. I flex my thighs, pressing them together to stave off the ache between my thighs.

We’re in the kitchen with the windows behind us. No one can look in but I can look out and I’m far too aware that this isn’t a bedroom. This isn’t something good little Caroline would ever do.

Then again, she also wouldn’t have run away months before her wedding. Gathering up my courage, I grip the skirt of my dress and slowly pull it up. Killian’s eyes follow the reveal, my skin heating from his gaze even though he hasn’t even touched me yet. Which I hope he does very soon before I combust.

I pull the dress over my head until I’m standing in front of him in my cream cotton and lace underwear and my platform heels. They’re cute and they give me some much needed height when talking to Killian.

The dress falls to the floor.

Killian inhales sharply, his eyes lingering on my chest, my breasts, the curve of my waist, my thighs.

“Turn around,” he says, voice gruff.

I turn around and show him the back. There’s a ferry passingdown on the water and it makes me far too aware of my state of undress. More than anything, it makes me aware of what’s about to happen. I can feel Killian’s eyes raking over my back, lingering in places.

I smother a gasp when he reaches out and brushes the back of his hand along the side of my back, just over the waist band of my panties. His thumb skates below the waistband and I suck in a sharp breath.

“I was thinking of wearing this set on my first day for some added confidence,” I muse, trying to see his reflection in the windows. “But I found an even cuter one. It’s pink lace with delicate flowers all over it and it fits so perfectly.”
