He stopped at her desk. “Oh yeah?”
She handed him a piece of paper. “Your warrant.”
He smiled. “Thank you. I was hoping that would come in today.” He went into his office to put his case file and coffee down and then went back out to Susie’s desk. “Get Shark and another officer to bring her in please.”
“Will do, sir.” She picked up her phone and buzzed Officer Shark. Daniels could hear her talking to him as he walked back into his office.
When Susie buzzed him to tell him Officers Shark and Smith were heading out, he picked up his cell phone and dialed Anna.
“Hey,” she said into the phone.
“The warrant came through. Providing that she is home, she should be here within the hour.”
“I’ll be right over.”
An hour later, Daniels found himself in one of the station interrogation rooms, face-to-face with Melanie Stone. The only other people in the room were Anna Jordan and Officer Shark.
Once Officer Shark started the recording, Daniels began. “State your name for the record please.”
“Melanie Elizabeth Stone.”
“Ms. Stone, did the arresting officer read you your rights, and do you understand them?”
“Yes, and yes.”
“Would you like an attorney present?”
“No, I’ve done nothing wrong.”
“Okay, well if you are sure?”
“Yes, I’m sure.”
“Ms. Stone, can you tell me where you were on October thirty-first, roughly around 10:30 p.m.”
“I was at a Halloween party at a friend’s house.”
“And the friend’s name and address?”
She rattled off a name and address, and even though the interrogation was being recorded, he jotted it down. “And, Ms. Stone, could your friend confirm your attendance at said party?”
“Of course.”
“So, Ms. Stone, are you acquainted with an Abigail Andrews?”
“Yes, we used to work together. Then she got married, and I haven’t seen her in a couple of years.”
“Would you say that you two were friends?”
She shook her head. “No, just colleagues.” She began to fidget. “Am I in trouble? You know I have been accused of shit before but it’s never been proven. I ain’t done nothing wrong.”
“Take it easy, ma’am. We’re just trying to get some information about Mrs. Andrews.”
At that point in the conversation, there was a knock at the door. Daniels shook his head in frustration and ignored it. The knock became more persistent, and curiosity got the best of him. He got up and walked to the door. He stepped outside, closing the door behind him.
“Lieutenant, we’ve found the head.”
“Good, but do you really need to interrupt me to tell me this? Can’t it wait?”
