I looked up at her. “I know I broke the rules. You don’t have to fire me. I’ll go quietly.” I was already ashamed enough. I justneeded her to let me leave with the single shred of dignity I had left.

“Sit down,” she commanded.

I obeyed.

“He seduced you?”

“I—” It wasn’t quite so simple, but I knew what she wanted to hear, and I didn’t want her to yell at me or admonish me further. “Yes.” My eyes were firmly trained on the floor.

“You like teaching?”

I glanced up at her, nodding more slowly that time. What was she getting at?

“You like teaching…at Montgomery?”

I met her gaze more firmly, nodding a final time.

“You’re on probation from now until the end of the following school year. Any indiscretion, no matter how small, and you’re gone. Do you understand?”

“Yes,” I breathed, in shock that she wasn’t going to fire me.

“I sent him to pack his things. You are not to go near the carriage house until he’s gone.” She held eye contact with me so I understood her stern instructions.

“Okay.” I swallowed. I needed to see him. I had to ask him myself if what he’d said was true. If it wasn’t, we’d find a way to be together, but if it was…

“You can go.”

I rose from the chair once more. “Thank you, Headmistress,” I replied softly before staggering down the hallway.
