She rubbed a hand across her pelvis and my cock jumped. I had absolutely no breeding kink, but something about that was hot as fuck.
She turned to me. “Where did you find that thing?”
“In the upstairs bathroom sink.”
“Dad!”
Larry shrugged. “I wondered where that got to.”
“With your daughter here now, it wouldn’t hurt to get that security system up like we talked about.”
Larry shook his head. “Bah. I hate all that newfangled crap. I don’t want to be rushing in here to push some code. What if I forget it and the police show up with that thing blaring all out to high heaven?”
“The boys can also install cameras. That way you can keep an eye on Noodle anytime you’re away.”
I looked over at Kat and winked, hoping she’d catch what I wasn’t saying out loud.
“I think that sounds like a great idea, Dad. We can even get one of those doorbells where you can see who’s outside from your phone. You won’t even have to get up if you don’t like who’s there. You can fuss at them from your couch.”
Larry’s head cocked to the side. “Now that idea does have some merit.”
“Do you think someone could come out and give us a quote?” Kat’s blue eyes stared into mine.
Blade ran the security firm, and he had several older clients whose kids checked in from afar.
“For our favorite neighbor, I’ll make sure it’s a priority.” I rapped my knuckles on the counter and backed away. “Gladto hear you’re doing better, Larry. Pixie will be expecting you on Thursday. And my number’s on your fridge for a reason. Anytime you need to leave without Noodle, give me a call. You know I’ll look after her.”
Larry smiled. “Thanks, Mav.”
Kat turned to me. “Yeah,Mav.“ She licked her lips. “Thanks.”
Fuck. The way she said my name, the raspy tone with a hint of breath… I had to get out of there before I got a hard on in front of her father. I cleared my throat as I stepped through the doorway. “How long are you here again?”
“Six weeks.” Her gaze locked on mine.
Oh yeah. This could be perfect, just the thing I was looking for. A relationship of sorts with a clear end date. Just enough time to quell whatever bug I’d caught from Bear, but not enough time to catch major feelings. “Number’s on the fridge for you, too. Anything you need while you’re visiting, I got you.” I gave her one final eye fucking. “Anything at all.”

It had been several days since Mr. Sex on a Stick left us in the kitchen. Dad and I were settling into a routine. Maverick’s friends had come by and set Dad up with a security system. He hated it, no surprise there. But it made me feel a lot more at ease. They set up the usual alarms on the doors and windows, then added a few cameras to watch the doors and one inside.
They sent me an app for my phone that let me tap into the cameras. I had a feeling I’d be using that a lot once I got back home. Instead of calling Dad ten times a day to check on him, I could peek in on the camera and make sure he was shuffling around. Or, at least, until we worked out getting him an aide or into an assisted living facility. After talking with the hospital social worker, I learned that process wasn’t as simple as I’d expected.
We were on the waiting list for a home health aide, and when a room opened up at the assisted living place, we’d get a call from them too. Never mind the fact Dad was opposed to both options.
I’d taken Dad shopping and gotten him a giant medicine organizer. It should have been foolproof with its days of the week and hours of the day, but with so many boxes, even I was getting confused. But he had six weeks to get used to it. Once it was filled in for the week, all he had to do was take the right day at the right time. Simple as that.
I sighed. If only. Dad mentioned a few oddball things, like cooking for visitors that never showed up and the man who bought vegetables from his garden. I hadn’t met any of these people, but it had only been a week. And that was a project for another day. Today’s project was clear.
“Let’s start with one, Dad. Surely you don’t need twelve different guns.” After finding another gun between the couch cushions and one in the chest freezer, I started the crusade to downsize the supply. Obviously, it wasn’t safe to leave them lying around, but I was also getting increasingly worried about his hallucinations.
“They do different things. It depends on the situation.”
“Different things? They’re guns. They shoot bullets. And you live in the middle of nowhere. Those two look like they belong in a war zone. Surely you don’t need either of those.”
His eyes narrowed as he stared me down. “You’re hardly one to talk. I don’t think I’ve seen you wear the same pair of shoes yet.”
