He laughed. “Excited isn’t even the word. When are you due? Do you know if we’re having a boy or a girl—wait?” He took a step back.

“What?”

“You went to your doctor’s appointment without me. I should bend you over my knee and spank you for doing that.”

“I’m not opposed to being spanked, but like I said, you had a lot going on.”

He shook his head. “From this day forth, you bet not do a damn thing without me by your side. You hear me?”

“Loud and clear, baby.”

He lifted me up, and I instinctively wrapped my legs around his body. He led me across the hall to my room and set me on the edge of the bed.

“What are you doing?” I asked as I leaned back on my elbows to look at him.

“You’re finna be off your feet for the rest of this pregnancy and your postpartum phase. Fuck you thought this was?”

“Noble, please, be for real.”

“Sunni, you’ve done too damn much already. Your ass is clumsy, and I don’t need you moving too much and hurting yourself or my baby.”

I laughed. “So what? You’re finna be my personal servant?”

“I’m finna be your doting and loving husband.”

“No ring on my finger.” I waved my hand in the air.

“That can change today.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Yeah?”

“We can go to the jeweler and get your wedding ring right now and hit up one of those twenty-four-hour chapels.”

I scrunched my nose. “I know I play a lot, but I want my first marriage to be my only marriage. I also want it to be magical. I don’t want to rush into it because we’re having a baby. I want to plan it so it’s a day neither of us will ever forget.”

He nodded. “I got you.”

Noble kneeled down and rubbed my feet. I closed my eyes and let a moan escape my lips. I basked in the feel of his fingers kneading against the sole of my foot.

“You didn’t answer my questions earlier.”

“I don’t know the gender. They said we should be able to find out at the next appointment. All I know is that the baby is the size of an avocado. She says the measurements are putting me at the start of the second trimester, . . . so according to my calendar, we made this little nugget the day you left.”

“I knew that time was the time it would happen. I could feel it the moment I released in you.” He kissed my toes.

I giggled. “I have a question, though. How do you feel about me making baby content? I want to document the journey and post things on social media.”

“I don’t mind. You’re a social butterfly, and I love the documentary aspect, to have everything in one place for our child to see when they get older. All I ask is that you don’t post our baby’s face all over the internet. It’s somesickpeople out there, and I don’t want to go to jail for killing any weirdos.”

“I agree one hundred percent. It’ll just be me and the bump. They won’t see more than that, because I’ve watched enoughepisodes ofLaw and Order: SVUandCriminal Mindsto know what happens on the internet. Protecting our baby is my number one priority as well.”

“We’re about to be parents, for real. This shit is so surreal.”

“You’re going to be the best dad.”

Noble sat up on his knees and looked at me with soft eyes. “You think so?”

“I know so.”
