“Don’t worry, dear. I’m sure Enzo had his reasons for not telling us. I’m just happy we have a daughter-in-law and a grandbaby on the way! Do you know what you’re having yet?”

“It’s a girl,” I murmur.

“Eek! I’m so happy! I’ve always wanted a girl to spoil, and now I’ll get two! I can’t wait to spoil both of you and go on shopping trips together,” she says happily.

Okay… this woman is not at all what I expected. Right now, she’s looking at me with kind eyes and she’s been holding my hand since she sat down. I don’t know what to make of her.

I thought she would hate me when I told her we were already married, but she’s been so nice and kind this whole time, and it’s making me tear up a bit.

“Thank you,” I whisper, a bit choked up. I wonder if my mother would have been like this… so genuine, nice and caring if she were still alive.

“I’m going to use Enzo’s office for a while since you two look like you have a lot to talk about,” his father says, getting up and walking down the hall toward the office, leaving us ladies alone.

“We’re going to be throwing you guys a party on Saturday,” she tells me a moment later, with more excitement lacing her voice.

“Oh, you don’t have to—” I start, but she cuts me off in her excitement.

“Nonsense! It’s about time everyone knows my son is off the market.” She grins, wickedly.

“Well, I do appreciate that,” I say, and she gives me a knowing smile.

“Let’s plan a party!” Giana says, exuding excitement too.

And that’s how we spend the next few hours, planning a reception that’s happening in just a few days.

CHAPTER 28

ENZO

My office is mostly quiet except for the soft hum of voices that carries every once in a while, as everyone continues to work. Things have been super busy since I walked in here this morning.

My desk is filled with papers that need to be attended to, arranged in different piles in order of importance, just waiting for me to get through them.

I pick up my phone and dial my receptionist, who answers right away. “Send Gary into my office.”

A moment later, there’s a knock on my office door. “Come in,” I call out.

“You wanted to see me, sir?” Gary asks when he steps into my office.

“Take these up to legal,” I tell him, handing him a folder that contains the set of papers I was working on. “Tell them to redraft the contract with all the changes I’ve made.”

“Yes, sir,” he says, scurrying out the door.

Silence returns, and I’m just about to grab another stack of papers when my cell phone rings. I quickly pick it up from my desk to see my father’s name on the screen.

“Hey, Dad. What’s going on? Now is not a good time, I’m in the middle of?—”

“Oh, yes. I’m sure you’re in the middle of playing catch-up on all the work you’ve missed while being gone for a week or so,” he tells me.

“How did… never mind,” I mutter.

“You’ll never believe where I’m currently sitting right now,” he says, and I let out a sigh, knowing he won’t let me get off the phone until he eventually says what it is he called for.

“All right. I’ll bite. Where are you?”

“You’re a little shit, you know that?” he asks, humor lacing his voice.

“What did I do?” I ask, groaning over the line. I mean, it could be a million things, you know?
