“I could tell,” he said and they both laughed.

Then he realized what had just happened. “Shit. I forgot the condom.”

She laughed. “I must be a bad influence. You cussed in front of me again.”

“God, I’m sorry, Jaclyn. I should’ve…but you were so tempting and I wanted you so badly I didn’t even consider—”

Jaclyn put her fingers against his lips. “I got a shot while I was in Dallas. I won’t get pregnant. And I don’t think either of us needs to worry about anything else. Do we?”

“No.”

“Well, then, quit worrying and kiss me.”

“Yes, ma’am,” he said, and did.

Chapter Thirteen

Jaclyn had beenback from Dallas for a couple of weeks when she called and asked Marshall to come over one evening. She’d sounded odd. He couldn’t put his finger on it but he knew it wasn’t his imagination. She definitely hadn’t sounded like herself. It was a little odd that she’d called him anyway since he usually did come over when he finished work. He knocked on the cottage door. Then he saw her face and knew something was up. “What’s wrong?”

She stepped aside to let him in. “Nothing’s wrong. Exactly.”

He put his arms around her and kissed her. She responded but it took her a moment, which wasn’t really like her either. “Talk to me.”

She sighed and led him to the couch. “Can I get you a beer or something?”

“Am I going to need one?”

“I don’t know. You might.”

“I’ll wait.” They both sat down.

It dawned on him what she might be about to tell him. After all, no birth control was one hundred percent dependable. “Are you pregnant?”

She looked startled, then laughed. “No. You don’t need to worry.”

“I wasn’t worried,” he said, realizing it was true. Oh, man, a baby. And the thought hadn’t struck fear in his heart. He was well and truly a goner.

“I’m not pregnant. I told you I got a shot. It’s very reliable.”

“Okay, then what’s wrong?”

“The property manager called today.”

Property manager? “Of your condo unit?”

“Yes. He said the building will be ready to move back into next week.”

Boom. That meant she’d be going back to Dallas. Soon. She wouldn’t be around to see every day. To make love to. To talk to. To just…be with.

“Marshall?”

I don’t want you to leave.“I didn’t realize your place was that close to being finished,” he said carefully. “It seems pretty quick for as much work as you said they were doing.”

“Almost three months isn’t quick. But I’ll admit, I was surprised. I thought it might take at least another couple of weeks.”

He started to ask her when she was leaving and what that meant for them but he couldn’t force the words out. He was pretty sure he wouldn’t like the answer.

“You look upset,” she said. “Are you?”
