Kairos caressed my hair as he lifted me up and started carrying me around the room. He put me down on one of the benches and unbuttoned his shirt. Tears cascaded down my face, my heart breaking for something I would never have.
Maybe it was the aftershocks from sex that had me emotional, but if the circumstances were different, I would’ve allowed them to take me with them. If I were somebody else and if they weren’t monsters I was sent to apprehend, I would’ve allowed myself to open my heart for them.
Kairos draped his shirt around my shoulders, and only then did I realize that he somehow removed my crop top without me noticing. I looked up at him, at that vein throbbing at his temple, and I knew he was still angry with me.
But he cared enough to have me covered. Even the other two, Alexander and Dominic, seemed to have calmed down a bit.
I couldn’t look at them. Couldn’t let them see my tears, so I did what I always did best. I got up and went closer to the altar, wiping my tears with the sleeves of Kairos’s shirt. This next part would hurt like a bitch, but I had to do it.
I had to do it for my brother and all those other kids, men and women who got fucked over in life.
I kneeled and took the knife into my hand.
“We need to talk, Echo,” Kairos said. “What just happened—”
“Means nothing,” I said as I turned around, plastering a smile on my face. “Did you think that just because you fucked me senseless I would suddenly forget who you are?”
“You don’t have all the facts,” Alexander butted in. “What they’ve been telling you—”
The doors of the church opened and Athanasya walked in with other members in tow.
“What we’ve been telling her and sharing with her is the truth. You three don’t deserve to have this life.” Athanasya smiled at me. “Seize them.”
The men from The Order rushed in, and before any of them could react, they had Dominic and Alexander on their knees, holding their hands behind them, with guns pointed at their temples. Kairos looked at them, then at me. As the first police officer walked into the church, he lunged.
“You motherfucking—”
But he never got to go too far.
I stumbled backward as he hit into me, but my body wasn’t what stopped his advances. He took a step backward, stumbling on his legs, and that’s when I saw it.
The knife I was holding lodged deep in his chest.
“No,” I breathed out, my eyes flickering from the knife to his eyes.
Blood trickled down his chest just as he fell to his knees.
I was immovable. Powerless.
“I guess you got what you came here for, Sparrow,” he rasped, blood slowly rushing through his mouth. “You managed to kill me.”
“No!” Dominic wailed, fighting against the guards. “Kairos!”
“Atta girl!” Athanasya laughed as I watched him fall in front of my eyes. “That’s how it’s done!” she cheered on.
“What did you do, Echo?” Alexander cried out, and it was enough to sober me up.
“I did what I needed to do, darling.” I smiled and walked over to him. “You look perfect on your knees,” I murmured and kissed his cheek. “But I would like to hear you beg, Alex. Beg me to save your friend.”
“Never,” he spat out. “When we get our hands on you, you will be the one begging.”
I bopped his nose and stood up. “I’m counting on it, pretty boy.”
The rest of the police officers rushed in, already going for the two standing members of the Triumvirat. They already had all the details, all the evidence needed to put them away for a very long time.
And if my heart broke a bit as Dominic kept crying out for Kairos, I would never admit it.
This was, after all, just business.
