But how could I stop when my heart burned with the fire that swallowed Ash’s car?
“Skylar!” Kane’s voice traveled to me, but my muscles refused to move. My mind was stuck on the scene I saw.
They were gone. Both of them, as if they never really existed.
How was I supposed to live without them? What was I supposed to do?
They were mine. My entire heart, my world, and they took them.
Judah took them from me. He took the one last thing I had left. The one last good place I could call my own was in their arms.
I threw my phone to the ground, flinching at the shattering sound of the screen breaking. Pressing my palms to my cheeks, I could feel the wetness beneath, and I knew that Kane couldn’t see me like this.
If I told him what just happened, he would urge me to run. He would tell me to disappear.
But I wasn’t running. I wasn’t going to tuck my tail and let Judah win. Not this time.
He wanted me to suffer? He wanted to create a monster? That’s what he was going to get.
Wiping my cheeks, I placed my feet to the ground, inhaling sharply.
Judah took what I loved the most. I was going to do the same.
“Sky,” Kane said as he pulled the curtain away. He took one look at me and already knew that something wasn’t right. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah.” I smiled, pushing away the thoughts of Dylan and Ash from my mind, even though my heart kept cracking with every passing second. “The doctor gave me something to sleep, so now I’m feeling better.”
“You don’t look better,” he murmured and took one more step toward me. “Were you crying?”
“A little bit.” There was no use lying. “I just felt a bit overwhelmed, what with Rowan and e-everything that’s going on.”
He pulled me into his embrace without a second thought, and I buried my face in his shirt, inhaling his clean scent. I was going to miss him, and I knew that he was going to hate me for what I was about to do, but I had to.
“Is there any news about Rowan?” I asked, unmoving.
“That’s why I came here. Surgery was successful, and he’s currently in ICU, recovering. Sky.” His fingers wrapped around my biceps, and he pulled away, looking at me. “Rowan is going to be okay.”
“Good.” I nodded. “That’s good.”
He frowned. “You don’t seem too happy.”
“I am. I just…” I took a deep breath. “It’s been a long night and I’m not going to be calm until Ash and Dylan come back.”
“Did they call you?”
“Yeah,” I lied. “They’re on their way.”
God, this hurt. Keeping this inside hurt, but I wasn’t risking Kane’s life just to avenge the two men I loved.
“Do you mind giving me the keys to your car? I think I dropped Dylan’s sweater there, and I know he would want me to keep it for him. I just want to check if it’s still in the car.”
In reality, I needed his car to get away from here.
Rowan was going to be okay, and if he was stuck here, Kane would be okay too.
“Yeah,” he murmured and fished his keys from his back pocket. “Just remember to lock it once you’re done.”
“I will,” I muttered. “You’re a great friend, Kane. You know that right?” I said as I looked up at him. “Don’t ever change, okay?”
