I slowly turned around, his arms loosening enough to let me move, and then tightening again when my chest pressed against his stomach. I lifted my head and looked at him, for the first time noticing a small scar beneath his left eye.

“Y-You,” I stuttered. “You saved me.”

“I did.”

“I—”

But I never managed to say anything else, because before I could comprehend what was happening, my vision blurred, dark spots appearing on the periphery, and it had nothing to do with my choking session.

“Did you drug me?”

Everything went black.

CHAPTER6

I was in the meadow, surrounded by golden retriever puppies, petting their soft fur, rolling between the grass with them, when the sound that wasn’t there before started echoing across the meadow, scaring the puppies, making them run away from me.

Tick-Tock.

Tick-Tock.

Tick-Tock.

The blue skies started turning grey, and the dark clouds came in from the west, rushing toward the meadow, bringing a sinister feeling with them.

Tick-Tock.

Tick-Tock.

Tick-Tock.

Thunder cracked through the sky, followed by the first droplets of rain falling on my face, and before I could even get up and start running after the puppies that were now nowhere to be seen, darkness crowded the meadow, shadows coming closer and closer and closer and closer…

I could feel it touching my skin, my bare arms, and my face. The whispers in the wind sent goosebumps through my body, my name like a prayer on the wings of crows that appeared out of nowhere.

Alessia…

Alessia…

Alessia…

“Leave me alone,” I shouted at the top of my lungs, yelling at the wind, at the darkness surrounding me, but it didn’t listen. Immobile, rendered speechless, it finally reached me like an avalanche on a mountain, and within a second, I was consumed, all wrapped up in its dark cocoon.

“Alessia,” a familiar voice called out, making me open my eyes.

Unlike the meadow and the darkness that was coming at me, the light welcomed me—a blinding light, and I closed my eyes once again, fighting the headache starting to appear.

“Did I fucking die?” I asked, slowly pulling myself up, holding one hand over my eyes.

“Sorry, what?”

“I mean, it’s too bright for this to be Hell, and while I might be surprised that I ended up in Heaven, I am sort of happy.”

“You didn’t die.”

“No?” I moved my hand from my eyes, squinting at the figure sitting next to me.

Nico.
