“Except Joe was stalking me.He knows my routine. He knows when I’m home or at work or getting groceries.I didn’t have anyone else there, no one to corroborate my story.Nothing.”

“We’ll figure it out,” he says simply.

I want to ask him why he’s helping me, but I’m so tired—too tired to get into it tonight.

I have no idea why he keeps sayingweor why he’s being so nice, but I’m not going to complain.I could use a friend right now.

“Sure,” I say.“Except now, I don’t know what to do or where to go.”

“Let me look at your car, and we’ll go from there.”

He tugs me around the car to the hood, which has now stopped smoking, so that’s something.

He bends over the hood, frowning at my engine.

“What’s your name?”

He blinks, turning to look at me.“Knox.”

“I’m Daisy.”

He smiles.“Daisy.”

I shiver at the sound of my name on his lips.

“What do you think?”I ask.“About the car?”

“Let’s see.”He returns his attention to the engine.

As I watch him, I can’t help but wonder what his motive is for helping me.And why did he sayminewhen he first saw me?

Maybe he’s just a friendly guy.

I bite my lip, hating that everything with Joe has made me so distrustful of people.I used to trust my gut, but now I don’t know who or what to believe.

Yet something tells me I can trust Knox.

I only hope I’m not wrong.

Knox

I can feelDaisy’s eyes on me as I look over her car.I’m barely concentrating with my bear going crazy inside me and my heart racing out of control.I feel like I’m about to get the one thing I want most in this world.

I hated hearing about what that asshole did to her.I know I need to fix this for her.She can’t be a fugitive forever, and I can’t allow anyone to take her away from me.If she got locked up, I’d lose my mind.

“Looks like it’s out of coolant.I’m not sure about the engine. Can’t see much out here in the dark and without tools.”

Daisy nods, biting her full bottom lip as she glances down the road like she expects someone to come chasing after her at any minute. Is that a real possibility, or is she just nervous?Still, better to be safe than sorry.

“I’m going to push the car off the road.We can hide it in the bushes for today, and I’ll call a tow truck in the morning to get it and check it out.”

“Will they report it?”Daisy asks nervously.

I shake my head.“No, the mechanic is a friend. He’ll be discreet.”

She relaxes, and her golden eyes brighten.
