He shook his head. “Just to keep him in the loop.”
“Easy.” Although I didn’t intend to mention the personal development between Fiona and me. At least, not yet. Hopefully Kade would keep it to himself too. I checked my phone, but there were no messages. “Have you heard whether the auction went ahead last night after our interruption?”
“No.” He scowled. “No one would tell me anyway. They’d have gone straight to you or Ronan.”
“True enough.” After all, it was my team who’d be scouring the dark net for updates. “No issues with the police?”
“No, thank God.” His upper lip curled, he sipped the tea and set it down with a shudder. “I don’t even want to know what’s in that.”
“She didn’t tell you?”
He pursed his lips. “She might have, but I was probably distracted.”
I hid a smile. I’d bet he was. One look in her big eyes and he became blind and deaf to the world.
Across the room, the bedroom door opened and Fiona padded out, wearing a cotton King’s Security t-shirt thathung to her thighs. Her hair was mussed and she squinted at us blearily. I half-expected her to squeal and run back to the room when she spotted Kade—either because of the embarrassment of having him see her like that, or because she was ashamed of the fact her casual attire made it even more obvious we’d slept together. But instead, she smiled, walked straight over to me, and dropped onto my lap.
She looped her arms around my neck and kissed me. “I’d have preferred it if you were still in bed when I’d woken up,” she murmured.
My heart filled. I drank in the sight of her gorgeous face, with those endearing freckles across her nose, and the tilted edges of her smile. She wasn’t ashamed of what we’d done, and she didn’t regret me. Fuck, I was amazed at how good it felt to know that.
“Next time, I’ll do better,” I promised.
Kade cleared his throat. “Sorry, Fi, that was my fault.”
She rested against my chest and tucked her legs up as she angled herself toward him. I smoothed down the t-shirt to make sure Kade didn’t get an eyeful of anything she wouldn’t want him to see. Having her close to me like this was right. Every part of me knew it.
“So,” she said, sweeping that glorious hair over her shoulder. “Do we know where Bergen is?”
