“Six-three-seven-nine-three. Simple enough to remember in case we need it.”

“Speak for yourself. I’m going to jot it down.” She grabbed her notepad and a pen from her purse to record the number before quickly returning her attention to Palmer’s actions.

Squatting, he was moving the door and studying it up close. He took out his cell phone and aimed it at the door. “Looks like he’s taking pictures of the lock.”

“Or he could be magnifying the lock for a better look at any signs of a break-in.”

“Something I wouldn’t have thought to do,” she said, but then she wasn’t a suspicious criminal like he might be. “It still amazes me that an astute attorney and businessman like Palmer actually fell for Betty Lou’s story.”

“Not really.” Hayden glanced at her. “I should’ve let you listen in on Reece’s call. She can be very convincing.” A lopsided grin crossed his face.

Captivating. She had to look away before getting swamped in emotions.

She lifted her binoculars. Another car pulled up in front of Palmer’s house as he went inside and closed his door. She couldn’t make out the driver’s face. “Who could that be?”

Hayden flashed up his camera and adjusted his lens.

The guy in the car started to get out.

She held her breath as she waited to see his face, her hands trembling.

Hayden clicked away on the shutter. “Collins! It’s Wade Collins.”

“Really? They know each other?”

“We’ll soon find out.”

Collins marched up to the door and rang the bell. She counted to five, and Palmer opened the door. His expectant expression morphed into anger, and he appeared to be spewing expletives at Collins, his hands flying in all directions.

“We need to get closer,” she said. “Hear what they’re saying.”

Hayden kept clicking the shutter release button. “No need.”

“But…”

He flashed up a hand. “Hold on. You’ll see.”

His finger went back to pressing the button, and she watched Collins and Palmer through her binoculars. “Looks like they’re arguing.”

“They both seem mad about something.”

Collins spun and marched to his car, then roared away as Palmer slammed the door.

Hayden lowered his camera and opened his door. “Switch places with me.”

Before she could ask why he bailed out and came around the back.

She stared at him. “What’s going on?”

“You wanted to know what they were saying, right?”

“Yes.”

“Then get behind the wheel, and you’ll find out.”

Why he needed the mystery behind his actions, she didn’t know, but she complied and got out of the vehicle.

Hopefully, whatever he had in mind would finally give them the lead they so desperately needed. With the growing fear that Kai was in danger, every second counted. They had to find him before whoever took him made sure he was never found at all.
